I'm thinking about purchasing a 2003 Explorer Sport Trac. it has 14,000 miles, full power options, V6, 4 wheel drive, and a hard tonneua(sp?) cover on the back. I'm wondering what I should look out for because this is the only Ford that I have ever looked in to buying. How are the Trannys, engines, 4x4 components, reliablity, and anything else that I should take a look at before purchasing.
Sport-Tracs sometimes suffer from numerous little problems, but nothing major. I've had a few customers that have had to visit our service department a few more times than they like, but there's no consistent pattern to the problems; I can't say, "watch out for the A/C or the cruise control." Let's hope that the first owner got all the bugs worked out for you, but just in case, I think an extended warranty would be a good investment for the long haul.
From what I read in varies Explorer forums and my personal experience with my 95 Explorer, the bugs are all corrected over the years. They are relatively good trucks if you keep all the oils changed on schedules. No major troubles on my truck over the years since new. I bought a company truck used by my manager with all the repair bills and history on it. It was mainly for recalls and routine maintenance, normal wear and tear items. It has 278,000km on it now.
