alternative bed floor ideas?

The bed floor in my 59 F-100 fleetside bed was totally wiped out when I got it. I thought about redoing it with some sheetmetal but After looking at it for a while I'm thinking that is beyond my skill level... If you were in shoes, what would you do to reconstruct some sort of useable bed floor?

Adam -

I would cut out the bad floor, leaving the existing floor edges as angles to attach the floor panel to, probably from the top. If you're not comfortable with welding the new floor in, it could always be bolted.

Diamond tread plate always looks good and has some serious utility. I like it already!

I think a bunch of water probably sat in my bed for a long time. I used to use my truck t deliver firewood and after hauling some in the bed one day i noticed the front of the bed hd sunk about a half an inch or so and seperated from the front of the bed. I let my curiosity get the better of me one day with a grinder with a wire brush head on the front of the bed floor and found that the front foot or so of my bed was made of bondo and license plates... It was the same sort of the thing around almost all of the edges of the bed so I just got ahead of myself and cut it out... So that's where I'm at now

Is it for looks or utility? if for utility go to a sheet metal fabrication shop and have them bend a pan of 14 ga. cold rolled sheet steel with a 2" lip all around to fit inside the bed walls, drop it in, seal it with seam sealer and bolt it to the bed walls about every foot around the edges. If that's too big for you to deal with in one piece have it made in two pieces front and back overlapping over a support the full width of the support. Sheet metal screw or 3/16" pop rivet it together and to the support. The easiest option would be to search the salvage yards for a replacement bed.

I thought about cutting the old metal out, and replacing it with a new bed floor panel from a junked truck. If you want aesthetics, you can buy a bed off a newer truck that has been converted to a flatbed.

It's not that big a deal to replace the bed floor, check my gallery for pictures of the 16 ga gloor I had made at a sheet metal shop, total cost under $125

If you are looking for a replacement bed, keep you eye out for beds that people have made trailers out of. You can usually pick them up dirt cheap and then swap out the beds and resell the trailer to recoop some of the cost.

Good luck with it,
Bobby

If the rest of the bed is okay, you could cut out the bad floor and put stainless steel strips down with stainless steel hold-downs, in the same way as you would do a wood bed floor. I saw it on a truck and thought it looked pretty good. I just put a piece of plate steel down after I cut out the bad floor and bedliner-ed the whole thing inside.
