so i tried to engauge the hubs by hand and one did not move i recall someone saying it is a common problem but i want to know is the problem in the hub or the casing. the hub works with the electric switch but i would like to fix the problem if i can
The problem is the hub. Hopefully you're still under warranty. If not, then you'll have to buy a new pair...the upside is, they're likely to last a lot longer if you buy aftermarket.
so the next question is which hub are recomended
the x is 4x4 with 5.4 but i dont think that mattered
has anyone used manual hubs on the x. i did it when the hub went on my 91 explorer
I turn the hubs back and forth a few times whenever I wash the truck.(almost every week) It is easy to remember since I am already down there shining up the wheels.
Can someone explain why manually locking the hubs is to be used VS the auto switch in the truck? Must be a reason for both but I dont understand the mechanics of the system well enough...
thanks... I had considered the manual hub locks a basic back up.. but began to think there was something far more complicated involved... leave it me to make the simple, more complicated... lol
now.. what is the deeper reason for that silly little garbage bag hook... the Ford engineers MUST have had something else in mind..!
so i am able to turn the hub with a wrench is it possible to take the hub a part and clean it to free it up or is there some thing more seriously wrong

I had this problem. I let mine sit overnight loaded with a grease/WD-40 mix and they worked fine ever since. If you still can't fix it I found a pair of auto lockers (replacements) for about $350 for a set at 4-wheel parts. Manuals are nice and much more reliable, but if you usually are shifting on the fly, you'll find them a poor substitute.

I take it you had them off the X while sitting overnight?
