Thumbs up Trash or treasure?

Sold my 93 F250 SC 4x4 - (sniff) went a browsing and find a pretty clean straight 1970 100 step-side swb 4x4 6cyl, granny 4 spd. Pretty basic lil truck - no PS or brakes - hell it dosen't even have a radio - yet

Good news is it's $1000
Bad news is it's 1100 miles away. Does anybody know which front end it's likely to have - the bug ol knuckle ball or the later model? There are no lock outs on the front hubs - I assume full time 4x4 - sounds like I oughta drop the front driveshaft off for the trip.

Talk me out of it guys- before I do somethine I may regret

Both SWB and a step side is very rare indeed. It has open knuckle, drum brake dana 44 high pinion front axle. Easily converted to disc brakes. PS and PB were never an option on pre-73 4x4's, but are adaptable with a little work. I don't believe there was a full time transfercase being manufactured until 1973. The truck should have locking hubs.

Hmmmmmmmmm
From the photo - it looks like 4H & 4L on the transfer case - and the front hubs just have covers - no lock-out hubs.

May not be original equpt by this point - I guess I will see when I go get it.

I saw a pick on there the transfer shifter, it dose have 2wd. Also checked out the comments, it has the granny first which means it is going to be a long, slow 1100 miles back. Top speed will be around 60 unless you want to risk blowing the engine. Also noticed the bed dosn't look original since it is a diffrent color.

Hi ya Neo - thanks for stopping by. COOL! I wasn't looking forward to interstates at 60 mph with FT 4x4, - last time I was on I-80, 80 was about the minimum.
Yeah bed and seat are changed out, raido is gone - your basic key and a heater (litterally) - and it's an oldie but a goodie type.
Winter is comming and the other options here are a 340 Barracuda, and a honda Goldwing. Both are pretty reliable - but given the choice - 400HP mopar, 2 wheeler and the ol ford - best $1000 and 2 or 3 day investment - if it snows much, that goldwing just ain't much fun - ummmm neither is the Cuda

Even with $240 for a plane ticket - $150 for gas - phhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttttt Gimme the ol truck. Besides - I hate needing to borrow a truck every time I go th the hardware store. - and if it's a blizzard outside - all the better now!

I am selling my 93 F250SC 4X4 - 460 auto - any body want to bet which will get better milage?

I've got to be off my rocker - again..............

Ohhhh wellllll there are worse ways to spent time...

arn't there?

Hunter, I used to own a '69 'Cuda, 340 Six-Pack, all the good stuff, trick heads, dome pistons, cam, etc. Once I stuck a real short set of gears in it and 60 on the highway was a high rev deal. But it didn't take long to get to 60! In the wintertime I went with a huge set of studded snow tires and about 200 lbs in the trunk. With the posi setup, I could drive thru snow up to the bumper. I still hit myself in the head with a wrench once in awhile for selling it.

That little unit looks a little rough, but for $1000 and running/driving go for it! If I had to guess, I'd say there's something wrong in the front axle and someone removed the lockouts and replaced with dummy covers. Either that or those are drive plates and the front axle spins all the time. If this is so the front axle will likely be worn pretty bad. I don't know how anyone picked up the rear end ratio and how it would scream at freeway speed. That looks like a T-18 to me from the pics, not really a "granny" tranny if the tranny's in first gear in the pics as a 435 would have the shifter almost hitting the dash. And not that the type of tranny it has will have any effect on cruising rpm. The rig likely has 3.54 gears and will cruise nicely at 70. 80 would be pushing it for any old 4x4. Probably get in the range of 15 to 20 mpg freeway.

To each his own. Sounds like it's Treasure to you! I've done the ebay, fly out and drive back deal twice now. In a 67 and a 69. Both from California to Texas. You haven't lived until you've driven a 35 year old truck, that you knownothing about through LA :-)

Both times, people responded the same way; "you're crazy ....(short pause)...Sounds like fun".

one of the trucks ended up not being worth the money, but I would not trade the adventure for the money. the second truck really complimented the first truck, now I have one really nice combination. And to my surprise the wife is still around.

have fun!

Well, she's here. and it ain't cheap.

I'll spare ya-all most the gruesome details - the truck made it to Denver - barely.

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

Cooked an alternator, the carburetor tossed some hardware on the road, Number 3 cylinder went dead at 500 miles, and generally she tried to shake rattle and roll it's way to Denver - Severe driveline vibration in the 60 - 65 MPH. I pulled the front drive shaft in Reno_ should have pulled the rear - it's bent a little.

Since getting back, I replaced the head - intake lost its keeper, exhaust exploded a lifter and 5 bent pushrods. Found the two, 12-28 screws for the carburetor, (I'd like a minute with the bonehead that had THAT idea) complete tune - minus carb kit - carb works but shafts need shims etc. new one is inbound. Pulled the 11.5x32 tires and installed 235x75R15's - (it steers! it steers!

Replaced the rear drive shaft, all u-joints, a heater core, and radiator cap. Heater lines - and by dingy - she's starting to drive out really nice! Still needs a battery, there's a lil crappy one the clearly isn't right size.

Body wise, the worst rust is behind both front wheels, a trouble spot or two in the bed. The frame mounts, floors and underside are 95% cleean and straight

Tight, no rattles, motor is strong and tight - judging from the cylinders, it's very fresh.

Would I do it again?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,,,

Congrats.

you might be too close to the incident to asy that you'd do it again. In a liitle whil, you'll probably look back and consider it "good Times" :-) ANd then you'll be off to find another crazy project....Of course, that's just my experience.

I have about decided that my next project will be some sort of all new Kit. No rusty greasy stripped old bolts for me...I just want to unpack it, bolt to torque specs, drop in a crate motor and enjoy it.

Curious as to what transfer case it has in it. I know the F100's only came with single speed t-cases, and the Bronco's of the same year had the 2 speed, but were only offered with an automatic or 3 speed standard. How-ever, the 4 speed swap using the same t-case can be done with the Bronco, and the 2 speed t-case can be put into the F100's. Is it a married or divorced case?

judging from the ebay photos of the transfer case lever he has the same transfer case my rig has, single speed dana 21 wich would not be good with a 3 speed!
Maybe it was swapped for the bronco setup but they used the same old shift **** from the f-100?

I do believe many 67-72 4x4x came with PBs.

Sounds like treasure to me.

I can vouch for that, my 72 4x4 has power brakes but it has drums all around!
