Awhile back my glow plug controler quit. I got a new one at NAPA for 120 bucks. put it in and seamed to work fine for a week or two. i noticed that after the engine started the gp's would not cycle. figured it was just to warm out maybe. it was in the upper 50's. now with the wether getting colder it started cycling. Thats where the problem comes in. today when I fired her up the glow plugs came on went off started truck no problem. then the glow plugs cycled on and stayed on for a good ten seconds maybe a little more. I imeditally shut her down and they went off. restarted and they stayed off. when i went to leave work tonite the glow plug light came on for about normal time but no amount of crank would get her started. disconected the glow plugs gave her a shot of either and kicked rite off. checked the glow plugs and all 8 are burned up. luckily all motorcraft so they should come out easily. my question is one did i get a bad glow plug controler. and two when i installed the controler i wraped the threaded end that threads into the block with teflon tape would this effect its operation and if so what should i use if anything. oh i forgot its a 1985 6.9L F250. sorry it got so long and thanks in advance to any insight.
Redneck you may have a bad afterglow latching relay. It uses voltage from the alternator to regulate how long the glowplugs are on after it starts.
All that expensive crap is why I went to manual glow plug control.
Napa did not have one when mine went, Ford quoted me 150 dollars for the controller,
I went to Advance and got a manual momentary switch for 6 bucks and had a 10 foot piece of wire in the garage to run from the fuse panel to the switch then to the relay. Now I only use the glow plugs when I need them and they last for years instead of months. I had to replace three in five years.
I doubt if the teflon tape is causing any problem.
When your old controller went bad, it might have toasted some of your glow plugs, and then the rest of them went. When my controller quit, I took the advice of many members on here, and installed a momentary pushbutton. Soon after all my Glow plugs were no good, but I think this was just the aftermath of the bad controller. I replaced them all, and still use the push-button, and I am happy with this method, as most members here.
well the old controler went bad when i was doing the heads this summer and it got hit by a lift chain slipping alittle. I then used a push bottom set up, but I like having a controler since other people drive my truck and some cant count to 4 very well. I took the controler back to napa and they said they would replace it and the glow plugs free. only problem is they will only give me autolite glow plugs claiming that they are the best. ill have to use them for now till ford can get some so hopefully they wont burn up in a week. they guy at napa said i should have the system checked by a quailfied mechanic he dont think its the controler thats bad but a relay or somthen. i dont have time or money to take it somewere so i was wondering if anybody new what i should check. or if there is really anything to check and worry about other then the controler. rite now it has the push botton again till they get a controler in. it all works fine with the push botton wich i have wired in at the solined on the fender. any help would be apprciate thanks
You can get the Motorcraft/Beru glow plugs at AutoZone for ~$10.00 each.
If your system works OK with the push-button, then it should work OK with a good controller.
P.S. the glow plugs that went bad on my 1984 6.9 were Autolite, and every one come out just fine with no swelling. I did replace them with Motorcraft/Beru though.
ya i got my one set at autozone the berus, problem is iam at school rite now in upstate new york and the nearest autozone is 50 miles one way and ford is 3 miles one way. there is and advanced in town but they dont have the berus. so in the fuel savings its just cheaper to go to ford. glad to here the autolites came out easy tho.
I was thinkning about getting them. think i might and give em a try. I got the new controler yesterday and installed it. now the system works just fine. iam 100% sure i had a bad controler and evey time i used it, it just got worse.
The ebay deal includes a new controller and GPs, if you already got a new controller, just continue using the Autolite GPs til you can get to an AutoZone, and then replace them with Motorcraft GPs.

Dave
have a 1992 7.3 diesel want to go manual for glow plugs, can you give me direction. Thanks
Autozone no longer carries Beru glow plugs unless they added them back to their product line.
When they were liquidating the remaining stock I bought all the local store had for 2.99 each, and I know some people on here got the for as low as 99 cents each.
