I am thinking about buying the Flowmaster cat-back kit for my 02 Navigator. The kit I am considering includes the 50-Series "SUV" muffler.
Questions:
I've read that the 5.4 liter motor tends to cause a "drone" at ~2000 RPM, resulting in an interior drone at crusing speeds. Does the Flowmaster kit cause ANY interior drone or ANY increased noise at the interior during part-throttle/crusing speeds?
I don't mind increased sound levels outside and under acceration or WOT, but I am only willing to tolerate a very small amount of increased noise at cruising speeds. What are your experiences with the Flowmaster kit?
I know there are other makes such as Gibson, Borla, Dynomax, etc. I would like to consider the Flowmaster system first.
I put the suv "Delta Series" Flowmaster muffler in my 00 Expe and it does have a slight drone to it at cruising speed. Although, that was what I wanted. It isn't too loud just a little deeper sound. My brother's Navigator is even louder with the same set up. Must be that DOHC motor difference. they both sound great under a load or during acceleration. Good luck.
I have a 99 Expedition 5.4L that I put a Gibson Aluminum catback on. I would have to say there is almost no difference in the cabin when cruising. On acceleration and if the windows are open it is more noticable.
I am pleased with it b/c of the deeper noise, but minimal if any cabin noise under normal steady driving.
I put an 18" Xlerator on my 99 Navi 5.4 DOHC, (99 also offered the SOHC).
I thought the drone was excessive, particularly when pulling my small fishing boat. So I took this one off and installed a 24" Xlerator which tamed it down considerably, but it still sounds very nice under acceleration.
I chose Xlerator over flowmaster as I like the striaght through design.
