I am having some trouble with an 88 f150 4.9 that I recently bought...the previous owner said the clutch lockout switch was bad and to push the pedal down hard to start it...I have been through the ford repair manual and it shows no such switch in the electrical diagrams or the mechanical drawings...I replaced the ignition switch and examined the lockset, actuators etc...all looks cool...turn key to first position, all is well, turn key to start...nada...my thought is that I may have gotten a faulty replacement switch...I have seen this problem before on several other cars...can anyone help?
With key power on, if you can jump start the truck by crossing the posts on the solonoid under the hood it probably is the ignition safety switch. It is located on the back of the clutch fluid resevoir inside the cab where the pedal assembly connects. I had the same thing go wrong on my 88. My cousin bypassed it for me but it is just as easy to go to the autoparts store and buy a replacement. The unit unplugs and splits in half to come off the clutch assembly.
Just went outside pulled rearward on black switch assbly... started right up...
I presume that (temporarily) bypassed the switch cuz clutch pedal was not depressed...You da man...thanx again...S
I had the same problem with my truck, used the old screwdriver on solenoid trick for a couple weeks. Eventually i got tired of that, even though it impressed my friends, so i bought a new switch from a ford dealer. The part is just some small plastic thingy, charged me about 80 for it.
Your problem may be the plate that the clutch master cylinder is bolted to is pulling away from the firewall.
Have some one press down on the clutch pedal. Look under the hood at the clutch master cylinder. If it has pulled away from the firewall, you need to purchase the bracket that Ford sells to fix the problem.
It bolts to the two mounting studs of the master cylinder inside the cab. This keeps the plate from pulling a way from the firewall.
The seach feature on this site doesn't work so I can't tell you what the part number is.
Also some people have said they found a worn bushing on the clutch pivot shaft which could cause the problem you describe.
You need to fix the problem properly since it is a safety issue.
