I have a 1962 f100 292 v8 three on tree. i have replaced the key switch and the starter cylioid. i have to hold the brakes and let out on clutch to turn off then unhook battery and was wondering if yall knew why, key switch will start it right up.
The engine will not turn off due to getting power to the hot side of the coil. The other end of the hot coil wire connects to the key switch. When the key is off, there is no power to the coil and the engine has to die.
Sounds like you have connected the hot coil wire to the wrong terminal on the switch or there is a short causing it to be hot. A short may occur at the switch if the connectors touch each other.
First ensure you have only one wire going to the hot side of the coil.
Second, checkthe ignition switch is properly wired and connectors are not shorted on the back.
If this does not fix the problem, you have to have a short between the key switch and coil, that is not likely but possible if PO messed with the wiring. You will need a cheap meter and learn how to use use it.
