I know I know, "not another exhaust thread " Ok, I like the sound of my truck with just my muffler cut off but I really want to know what it would sound like without cats too. If it is deeper and louder(which I know it will be louder) I wanna get them off and run true duals with 2 cherry bomb glass packs on each pipe.
my coworkers brother ran 2 cats instead of the 4 stockers with true duals and cherry bombs, said it was "louder'n hell". still said it sounded like a honda tho. Might as well get warlocks dude, with no cats. Uncap them and you've got yourself a crazy exhaust, like running open headers but with piping.
I myself am looking into going true duals with FM40s, and 2 magnaflow hi-flo cats in place of the 4 stockers. I hear that the magnaflow's release a bit more noise, so i figure 2 vs 4 is a bit bit more noise, and no cats at all would be a bit bit bit bit more noise.
You remove your cats, you gotta fool the O2 sensors, which you can buy the devices to do that.Your gains in power will be minimal to nothing. You would have to have a dyno to tell the diffeence. It will be louder for sure, but it will also be illegal. You may not have emissions inspections, but regardless, anyone who removes a working converter, and doesn't replace it with a working one is subject to a substantial fine.
My point,is, that it's a lot of trouble, with little to no advantage, and could cause you mechanical as well as legal trouble. You can legally replace the 4 stock cats with 2 high flow cats and put what ever exhaust you prefer, but it will never sound like a v-8. Porsche makes over 450 streetable, efficient, legal horsepower with cats, we can too.
I am definetly going to change my exhaust setup to true duals but I am still debating the cats on or off.
What is it that you can buy to "fool the 02 sensors"??? When you put that device or whatever on will it make your computer think you still are running 4 cats?
Nope, not a cop, just someone has learned too many lessons the hard way, and I want to share the info to help prevent someone else from making the same mistake.
There are and equal number of people who have had "good" experience, and "bad" experience. You have a 50/50 shot, what do you stand to gain vs what you stand to lose. It's just my opinion, and I truly hope if you do this, that you get in the 50% "good" category. Again, just my .02.
I was reading some other forum (gasp!) and there were about 1.3 million posts on this topic. Anyhow, some rep from magnaflow said that if you remove 4 cats, you have to replace all 4, or something along those lines. The 'precat' needs to be replaced with a hi-flo cat as well. Whatever. I say ditch the 4 stockers, get 2 hi-flows, and then throw some warlocks on it. That should be loud enough for ya...
