I have the cord laying here on my desk and it is not just a simple extension cord. It is encased in flexible plastic conduit with the exception of about 18" that is solid and straight. It has eight push type fasteners at various places along the cord with the round two prong plug at the block end. Does anyone have a drawing showing the route this thing takes? It may be obvious when I get under there and start but when in doubt instructions would be nice.

t_j82,
Where did you move to in NC ? I just had a buddy of mine sell his biz and his house in western NJ and moved down there for the same reasons(in NJ) you want to leave(NC) for. He's living in a little town called Snow Camp not too far from Chapel Hill. And he bought a bunch of acreage up near NC VA border to play on. Sounds like you moved too close to one of the major cities....

We live near Matthews which is not far from the SC border.
I think you are correct, without realizing it we moved way too close to Charlotte.

How do you get to the connection above the starter? Is it accessible from beneath the truck or from under the hood?

I just special ordered the cord for $69.41 for my local dealer. I got burnt on this one with a $45 mark up.

KurtNJr, I don't know what the route was. The dealer installed mine and according to the service writer the Diesel tech had to go look at one of the other 05 PSD's on the lot to see how the factory routed it.

ClubDorf, don't feel bad mine cost me $65 but frankly I'm not complaining. Having it is better than waking up when it is 5 degrees out and having to start it cold. MSRP on the option is $35, I figure it is cheaper since they probably put the wire in before the engine is dropped in so it is easier to route.

Talking Finally got my wiring harness

Well I got my wiring harnes today. connecting it was way easy, but ran into an issue. the harness seems much longer than it needs to be. no way to trim to fin either as both ends are manufactured. Tried every way I could see to route the thing with no luck. Called the dealer, the diesel tech had left fot the evening. Anyone have any insight as to the routing? I knoe it comes out of the passenger side next to the fog light. But through the frame rail? inside outside? Any help would be appriciated.

Talking location of connector

ClubDrof,

getting to the connection is the easy part. If you slide under thetruck from the front on the passenger side just inside the front wheel. keep sliding back until your head gets to about where the trailing arms start to get tapered down. look at the back end of the block and you'll see the starter. once you see it, slide your head a little farther toward the passenger side of the vehicle and look above the starter. there will be a round recessed fitting that looks like it is threaded. inside there will be two promgs arranged vertically. this is the actual heater. it is installed in what is otherwise one of the soft freeze plugs. even making the connection with the factory end of the cord is easy. the fitting that looks threaded isn't they are just concentric rings. the spring fitting/connector on the two prong female end of the cord slide into the fitting and then the spring steel "fork" slides over the concentric rings and it locks the cord in place. I was at this point 4 hours ago. thats when I too hit the wall of how to route the thing. spent about 40 min himming and hawing then decide I would disconnect it and try again tomorrow (veterans day) in the day light after I had talked to the dealer diesel tech. Hope this helps.

Mine was routed along the frame rail by the dealer, he had to drill the holes for the clips though. He said that they do not have predrilled holes on the '05. He told me it was longer so he saved the last clip and used it on the bracket next to the tow hook so the cord would be held up and eaiser to grab. He coiled what was left behind the bumper.

I haven't looked to see how mine was routed, won't be able to until this weekend (leave in the dark - get home in the dark).

I suspect any excess is behind my bumper as well. The diesel tech left about 5 or so inches out so I can hook it over the tow hook and get to it easy.

Talking Solved the Mystery of getting Routed.

called a dealer here in northern VA this am. Got a hold of one of the techs. Spoke with him while I was on the cordless phone lying under the truck. He said what they do if they have to install one with the engine in thruck is ty-wrap it to an existing line that is already connected to the frame rail. It is actually run along the topside of the frame rail itself. Here's what I did.>>I untaped all of the push connectors and took them off. Next I untaped the long ridgid plastic piece and took it out of the equation so the line had some flexibility. I then untaped the anti-chaf from the end at the actual 3 prong plug itself and slid it down towards the 2pin connector that hooks to the actual heater until it was butted up against the other piece of anti-chaf. I then taped the two together with the factory tape that had been holding the push connectors to the harness. This protected ALL of the harness save for about 18-20" right at the 3 prong plug end. I then taped the 2 pin connector up with masking tape to keep any junk from compacting in it. I then went to the front of the truck and routed the 2 pin taped end through the front end and over the frame rail towards the passenger side, pulled it to the rear of the truck to the beginning of the splash guard. here is where I pushed it under the splash guard so it was riding on top of the frame rail. I then took a coat hanger bent it straight and fished it towards the front and hooked the 2 pin connector end. pulled it to the rear and plugged it into the heater. I then worked from rear to front securing it with ty-wraps to any ridgid hose that was connected to the frame rail. At the front where it exits from under the splash guard, I used the existing holes in the frame and ty-wrapped the cord directly to the frame. This left the plug with about 10-12" free at the front end, I coiled it and ty-wrapped it around the tow-hook bracket with 4-6" free to plug it in. The whole process took me about an hour, but pretty painless.
