Question 48 crashbox swap

Hey there, can anybody give me some info on swapin out a 4 sp crashbox out of my 48 F47 239 flattie (proud to be Canadian) Double clutchin doesn't cut it. Mustang guy says T5 with 4 banger bell housing might work. We'r talking low budget. I'd like to stay Ford, even an auto is not out of the question. I figure i can deal with drive shaft and diff. and cross member. Fitting flywheel, bellhousing, clutch, shafts is my biggest worry . Thanks from a new user.

You could look for a synchro tranny out of a larger series truck, say F-4 or larger ( don't know the Canadian equivalent ) they used a sychro tranny. It will bolt up to the 239 flatty, but you have to make sure you get all the parts such as any linkage, bellhousing, clutch fork, etc... to do it. THey're rare, but you don't have to hack up your truck. You could also go with a kit to install a Ford C4 tranny.

An F4 is a pretty tough call, a C4 could work for me but what about fitting everthing.

A C4 swap sure isnt low budget altho they work great.

OTOH a 4spd truck tranny thru the 64 Y Block will bolt up, no clutch changes necessary. The Silent Syncro option goes back to 48 and they became standard in 53. You still have a non syncro 1st & reverse but at least that is tolerable. Ive learned to live with mine!
Those trannies were in F-100's thru 600's and are pretty much throwaways around these parts. I tried to give 4 away on here last year and finally took them to the scrapyard.

Why not try a 3 speed O/D from a '49 to '51 ford/merc car or truck? They should have the same size input shaft as your original trans., should bolt in and will need a drive shaft shortning. These units have a free wheeling mode that allows you to shift from 2nd to 1st even though 1st isn't syncro. Also, the OD. drops revs. by .72 in 3rd for great highway cruise with our thucks low rear end gearing. I think most of these trannies are side shift but there are many aftermarket floor shifters that will work. I found a newer unit, '57 that had a hurst shifter bolted to an adapter that was "u" bolted to the tail shaft.Check out this oldburb site as it explains the Borg Warner OD unit and how to wire it to split shift all 3 speeds to make a 6 speed for hauling. The site is http://www.classictruckshop.com/club...over/drive.htm
