I want to buy my brother's 92 F-150 4x4. It has bad rotors. He tells me that you need some special tool to remove the rotors on this thing. He said he couldn't get the tool anywhere. Is there something special about the hub on these trucks.
i wanted to do the same thing when i put on new pads but i couldnt find the right tool, i went to ford and everything and they had no idea what i was talking about. then at advance autoparts i found the right one, supposedly. i havent tried it yet but it is a big socket with six prongs sticking out one side and a 1/2" drive on the other. ive taken the hub off several times and tried different ones and i think i finally got the right one i just havent gotten around to trying it yet. its made by AmPro and the part number is T72047 and it says 6-slot wheel bearing locknut tool 3/4 - 1 ton on the front even though mine is a half ton. it says it removes and installs 6 slot front axle spindle nuts on 4WD vihicles. it costs about 10 bucks i think. but anyway i would give that a try because it should work. good luck.
Thanks, I'll give it a rip. The reason I'm buying this from my brother is that he just bought a 2004 F150. $40K. Whew, I about fainted. It is a sweet truck though.
NAPA auto parts carrys this. I have had one for a couple of years. Comes in handy. Also had the same problem with people not knowing what I talking about. Good luck
It's a real common socket that just has 4 rectangular protrusions each 90 degrees around a large socket. Any parts store should have it.
That's usually the tool for the F-250 and F-350's. I don't know what years are what, but I believe your hubs are just like mine where it's a 2 1/2" socket but it's very thin walled and the whole socket is 2 1/2" so it'll fit around the parts of the hub. Just go to autozone or napa and have a look.
Take the lockouts out, then clean the grease out to have a look. If it has 4 notches, 90 degrees apart, then you need the tool as low-side described. It's what I used on my 91, I doubt 92's are different. Go to Advance auto parts for it, should be $9.98 - part number is Ampro T72048.
Of course this changes if the lock nut is different in 92, but I seriously doubt it.
It might be one of two different sockets. In 95 or so, Ford started using a large six-point nut. Prior to that, you will need a 4-pronged spindle nut socket (that's the name of it). The 6-pronged one is for chevys, I believe.
I bought mine at Kragen for less than $10. None of the counter people had a clue what I was talking about.
