I have recently purchased a 2000 V10 SD 4X4 w/47,000 miles. What is the noise I hear when I put my foot into the throttle? I hear a knocking noise from the firewall area when I accelerate hard but it idles fine, no knocking at idle, slow acceleration or 3rd gear and higher. Can someone help me with this?
I can't seem to find anything on exhaust flutter on the search page. Can you give me some help on finding this info? Thank you for your quick response on my first question.
On my truck flutter occurs right at 1800 rpms. If you have metallic chattering sound then "welcome" to the flutter club. It is very common with the V-10's. Several things may cause it, ways to fix it easiest (cheapest) to most difficult (expensive). 1.) Since you have a 4x4, like me, you have heat shields on your "Y" pipe, they have been known to come loose and vibrate. You can re-weld them, or put hose clamps around them to keep them tight. The best option, take them off and place them in the trash can. 2.) The metal close out plate that fits between the engine and tranission is not secured at the bottom. If you crawl under your truck you can actually take a small screwdriver and pull this plate back. You can take a pair of pliers and gently bend the plate away from the transmission housing about one quarter of an inch. I went further and put a bead of silicon between the plate and transmsission. 3.) A set of Banks or Borla headers No more noise and a increase in power. Because the V-10 is not a naturally balanced engine vibration at 1800 rpm seems to be a common problem. Also, take a look at that cheap piece of junk Ford calls a "Y" pipe, you will then understand.
