302 to 460

hi all. quick question: aside from the obvious(frame mounts, c-6 tranny, heavier coils), what would it take to swap a 302 to a 460 in a 73 ford pickup? any fabrication/welding? or is it basically a bolt-in deal?

appreciated

fenderwell exit headers seem to be what everyone is using, they are pricey but fit well ($350 to $450) you can get them from broncograveyard.com makes the job easier. or if money is an issue then exhaust manifolds from a 460 powered truck or van (like i am going to do until i can save for the headers) will work just fine .i hope this helps.

I have a 73 F100 swb pick up. I put a 460 and c6 from a 83 model van in my truck. I used flow tech headers. They were just under $200. I've had them in there almost a year with no leaks. I did go to Hi Lo O'rielys and bought a starter for a 75 model full size car with a 460. That starter comes with a heat shield already on it. The headers that I have go between the engine and the frame rails. It's a tight fit, but it will work. In my truck, it started out as a 240 and 3 speed. I went to a 302 and c6, then a 390 with a 4 speed, then up to the 460 with c6. All of them were bolt in deals. If you decide to go through with the swap, let me know. I can give you a few pointers to make things easier and maybe a little cheaper for you.

If you are going to use the hooker super comp headers, you must also use the hooker super comp frame mounts, no others will work. They are a little spendy, but a clean install. I would like to know the part number of those flowtech headers. I thought hooker, l and l, and hedman were the only coices.

Slappy, the flow tech header part number for a 73 to a 79 ford F100 through F350 with 2 wheel drive and a 429/460 is 12564 for the standard headers, and 32564 for ceramic coated headers. I found my reciept for them, and they actualy cost $170.00 for the standard headers.

Hey Slappy, I bet if flowtech offers them for 2 wheel drive, they probably also offer them for 4 wheel drive. I also wonder what the actual difference in the 2 and 4 wheel drive headers is. It might be that the 2 wheel drive would interchange. It's an awfully tight fit and I doubt it, but you never know. If you want to find out for sure, I have the address, phone number, fax number, and email address.

I believe there is an issue with frame tower clearance as well as crossmember clearance on the 78/79 4wd. cross member shouldn't be a problem on 73-77 3/4 ton 4sp but the motor mounts are still an issue.

Did you use the van 460 motor mounts ? If so did you have to do anything to the towers ?

Mark, When I bought my 460 and c6, I gave 600 for the whole truck that they were in. The guy had bought a 1970 F100 with a 360 and c6 that were wore out. Then he bought the van which had low miles on a rebuild of the motor and tranny. He bought motor mounts and stands from a wrecking yard out of a 75 model. He put the 460 in the 70 model, then couldn't figure out what to do about the drive shaft and the exhaust. He got divorced, then broke, then discouraged and I ended up with a good deal. To answer your question, my mounts and stands did not come from the van, and the van stuff won't work as far as I know. Keep the questions coming, I like helping a fellow enthusiast.
