My little '94 Ranger 4.0L Automatic get 13 MPG.
What can I do to improve this situation?
If I wanted to get this MPG I would have bought an Expedition!!!
Have the air filter, spark plugs and plug wires been changed? Been a long time since the fuel injectors have been cleaned? Or a tune up? Are there specific symptoms this truck has other than bad gas mileage?
Yes I have changed the air filter, bosch plugs and new wires (from the dealer). The check engine light comes on and off. I checked the code and it says insufficient ERG flow. I checked the EGR valve with vacuum pump and it operates as it should. Any ideas?
I have a 4.0L Auto on my 97, and have always seen pretty poor gas mileage since new. The 5sp auto on the 97 is supposed to improve gas mileage over the 4sp auto too. I rarely have seen it get as low as you are reporting, but have seen it. Anytime I drive in real traffic constantly, where it is stop and go, I get down into the low teens for gas mileage. Also happens when I drive less than 5 miles a trip frequently. I have a 3.08 differential, and it doesn't handle loads well either. Although it can handle heavy loads, gas mileage even on the highway can get down to 16mpg quickly. Every dealer I've talked to said that was normal. You may have a problem if you are getting that low regularly on the highway or mixed driving though.
I have a 91 Ranger 3.0 v6 and have fought to get 16-18 mpg. I'm not sure what I should be getting but I thought it would be more. I have 82k on it and have always kept the air filter changed, and the plugs have been changed twice and the wires just within the last year.
