Yes, weak links in the water supply--our neighbor's wash machine hose busted, days of running water finally set off some alarm they had, and by this time water is running out of their garage door. The cops busted in and turned it off, but it resulted in new wood floors and a host of other issues.

How about those water alarms? Auto shutoffs? Is it still cheaper to rebuild the occasional house vs. equiping them all with that stuff?

If the truth be known, the washing machine supply lines probably create the same opportunity for a water disaster as the water heater. I have had the rubber type burst and when it happens, basically, water runs full force into your home. As a home owner, I suppose the responsibility for periodic inspection of all mechanical systems ultimately falls on your back. You can replace all supply lines with the metal braided type, inspect your water tank for leaks at frequent intervals and possible even replace it after a certain amount of time as a precaution. The pan and drain line are great if you can afford them. Lastly, if you're going out of town, turn the water off when you leave and at least you're protected while you're gone.
