I had the paddle mirrors on my '00 X, and swapped them out with real Ford power towing mirrors from a 2002 F-350. The question is that the original small mirrors had the little "heater" on the mirrors, the towing mirrors do not. They did have the 2 different connectors on them that attached correctly to my current connectors. I thought I read some were that all the mirrors were heated, but, I am not sure that is correct.
I am not positive of the question, but not all mirrors have heaters. I do not understand what you meant when you said that they had different connectors that attached correctly. There are 2 types of connectors and the dealer sells conversion connectors to make all of them attach as needed.
The original mirrors had 2 connectors, one "D" shaped with 2 wires black if I remember correctly, and another connector with 3 or 4 wires that was white. I assume that one connector is for the power portion of the mirror and the second connector is for the heating part. It doesn't get cold here in Vegas to really use the defrosters during the winter, but it was for my info if they were or not. My original mirrors did not have the "pigtail" connector that was removable, the tow mirrors do.
I took the door panel off and did some votage reading, with the rrdefrost off 3.3 on the black plug connectors, with it on 12.7. I also checked out about 10 other F250&350 none had the heater on the mirror. One of my fellow employees has a 350 with the rear defrost and his mirrors do not have the heaters on it either. I'll wait to winter and find out in the mountains.
You have to look at the mirror, it will have the defrost symbol on it. I think 03 Was the first year for the heated mirrors too. I have them on my 03 and sometimes hate them because they are always on which causes water to dry on them and leave a mess.
My '01 had the heated dog-ear mirrors, and now has heated moose-ear mirrors with edge mounted turn signals and running lights. The heat only comes on when I depress the rear window defogger switch.
Nope, my '00 X Limited has the defrost towing mirrors also. And I use them a lot, since here in Maine we have only two seasons..... winter and 4th of July.
