Can anyone advise the CORRECT tire pressure for a 2000 Ranger XLT with 225/70R 15 100S Wilderness HT tires?? Ford door sticker says 30 psi, Firestone Dealer says that's wrong, sidewall says 35 psi. Any help/documentation/reference to website appreciated....Mike
I worked at a Ford dealer and we always went by two rules:
Door sticker
or
32 psi.
I never remember anyone coming back with wear problems or blowouts because of it. If we noticed someone's tires wearing funny, like at the shoulders, we ran more air pressure, rotated the tires, or rebalanced them . People got 60-70K out of most tires. I got 75K out of Mich. on my Aerostar this way and I used it heavily.
I ran 32 psi in my Ranger, BIIs, and Aerostar. 300,000-400,000 miles of happy good wearing tires. I even had Firestone tires on my Ranger I replaced under recall (after I ran the rubber off them .
I drove the truck for 1.5 hours at a time at 70 mph during the heat of the summer (at 32 psi). I loaded the Ranger until it sagged. I deflated the tires to 15-20 psi and took it through the woods. Though the tires stunk off-road and loaded with mud quickly. I ran them at 20 psi during snow storms and drove many miles with 600 pounds in the back.
From what I have seen the biggest problem with Firestone tires are stupid people. I have seen people run the ATX tires until the metal belts are showing. Then they wonder why they blow out or they overload the Explorer and then don't inflate the tires more or drive it like its a Porsche at 80 mph. I just use to love people that came in complaining about vibration problems at 85 mph! in an Explorer. Solution = DUH! Slow down.
Run at door sticker (if it says 30 front/32 back, do it).
Run all tires 32-35 if towing something really heavy.
30psi is fine. I ran mine at 30psi until I replaced them and they all wore even with proper wheel rotation. If you haul a lot in the bed then you might consider raising the psi to 35 when hauling.
People have asked what the Firestone dealer told you, you have not replied. If you are asking for information please reciprocate.
For Firestone tires use the air pressure recommneded by Firestone for your vehicle and tires. Ford does not have the best track record for recommending tire pressures on their vehicles. Ford let "Sales and Marketing" determine the tire pressures they put on Explorer door stickers with disasterous results.
While I agree with Rebocardo on many points "Door sticker or 32 psi" is not going to work on many of todays applications. There are way to many different tire types and applications today that require many different tire pressures.
Thanks for using FTE!
