I am getting error code P0401. I had already replaced the EGR valve before reading any posts and that didn't fix the problem. It looks like the next step is to replace the DPFE sensor. I went to the Ford place and the parts guy said called it an EGR valve sensor and gave me the part.(part # 9J460) This part bolts on the front of the intake, has an electrical connector and two connectors for hoses coming off of the exhaust manifold. From one of the other posts, a guy said the placement of the DPFE sensor is on the left side of the engine behind the coil pack. Can someone tell me if the part I have is correct? If not, do you know the correct Ford parts number for the DPFE sensor?
Had a similar Code P0401 problem with an '01 4.0L. When I figured out that it was still covered under the warranty I went to the dealer to check. The service writer told me it was likely the sensor and not the EGR. Said that the sensors had a tendency to get condensation in them and short out. On this engine the sensor is mounted on the left side valve cover but my Haynes manual shows a different looking sensor in their discussion. I can try to copy and scan this information for you if you want it. Let me know.
But, given that the problem is emission control related, are they not obligated to a 5 year warranty on that stuff. Also think you'll need one of those computer boxes to reset the error code.
that was me that said my haynes manual showed the DPFE sensor on the left behind the coil pack. i didn't know where it was. so i got one and looked around till i found it. (in front on the intake manifold) needless to say, i'm not happy with my haynes manual. the DPFE sensor replacement took care of my problem. the code was gone when i started my truck up. i had the positive cable off the battery for about 20 minutes .

Good, then it sounds like the guy at the parts counter gave me the right part. I have a code reader so I'll replace the part, reset the code and hope that it was the right sensor. Thanks for all the replies.
The Haynes manuals can be confusing at times. It is real easy to get confused about which model/engine/etc they are talking about. They also do make errors, -the editors are human. Haynes manuals generally contain wiring schematics which are helpful. Chiltons Manuals can get confusing and have errors also. I have both for all of my vehicles except the Starion which I have an OEM manual for.
You should also be able to clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. This method wipes out your stereo presets and engine optimization factors tho:-(
Thanks for using FTE!

i have a 99 ranger, and was getting the same code, i narrowed it down to the dpfe, changed the part and the code has not come back. the part has been changed from being aluminum which was on the truck and it is now made of plastic with a different desing. So i believe that i have fixed the problem with the engine light.
