I have a 98 Ranger and it makes a tapping noise all the time I took it to a guy and he listen to it and told me it was afuel injector tapping does anyone if this could be true or what it might be and it dont sound like a lifter the trucks only got 70000 miles on it.
Thanks, Livefast
The fuel injectors will make a tapping sound. If you use a mechanic's stethoscope and put it to each one, you'll hear it loud and clear. It will sound like someone's hitting an anvil with a hammer. If you're not sure that's the sound, you can use the stethoscope to probe around.
OR as I did as a teenager, use a cut off broom handle. One end on the part you're listening to, the other in your ear! Believe me, it works.
Same thing works if you use a long screwdriver up to your ear........... uh just in case it has to be said out loud........ put the plastic end up to the ear, not the other end. This way you get to keep your broom.
In my 2000 3.0L V6, I have noticed the "clicking" under load. According to the forums, this is a common noise associated with the 3.0 Vulcan motor. I contend that by changing where I have fueled up, what type of octane rating, and also the usage of injector cleaners and/or additives is directly correlated to the frequency of you the driver noticing the clicking that I've described above.
Here's what I've noticed so far in 91,000 miles:
1. 87 octane makes the noise, no matter what gas brand I purchase. Some brands cause my truck to create more noise than others.
2. The use of 89 octane significantly lowers the clicking/pinging/knocking noise.
3. The use of the fuel system cleaner named "BG 44K" eliminates the noise for about 5 tanks of 87 octane. It (the noise) eventually creeps back into the fray.
4. The correct proportional use of Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel, no matter what octane or brand, eliminates most if not all of the noise when in use.
Hope this empirical evidence works... but remember, every FORD is different.
Experimentation, like what I've done above, is the key. Kinda like "bonding", ya get to know your truck better!
Where can I get some BG 44K cleaner, and I use 93 octane because I used a Hypertech power tuner and thermostat, and thats what I have to use..
