Pulled 8K lbs and let me tell you what a difference. Carride 100 gallons of water along too. Would of had to leave some gear/water at home if I was pulling with the Expedition.
Me, wife, baby, sister in-law, her step son, her 18 month old, and other sisters 8 year old. We even had one seat to spare.
At times I didn't even know the trailer was back there. Especially from a dead start what a difference. Going up I-80 from Sac to Auburn I had to back out of it I was keeping my speed so well.
My only problem was I only got 7.5 mpg.
7.5 mpg. What can I do, cuz the $102 it took to fill up needs to last more than one trip.
Even while towing and with that many people, you shouldn't have averaged that low. Most people have reported atleast 10-13 mpg while towing. You might want to try some Power Service Diesel Kleen. It "freshens" the diesel in your tank and keeps it relatively fresh. The diesel you get at the station isn't always at it's best. When diesel sits, it deteriorates. This deterioration leads to lots of black smoke, poor acceleration, poor starting, and in your case, poor fuel mileage. I stopped using it for awhile and things got bad. So I went out, filled up, bought a bottle and now the X runs like a champ. The acceleration is better, fuel mileage will hopefully be better, and the starts are alot better. You may also want to check your air filter, it may be dirty. A simple air intake upgrade also helps. Lastly, how fast were you going, and did you have it in "overdrive"?
I can relate with how big of a difference it is towing with the Excursion. I had a Expedition 4x4 5.4L and towed a race trailer that varied between 5,000 & 7,500 pounds. Man the Expedition did not like pulling that trailer, especially up in the hill country in north Texas. I've towed the trailer a couple of times with the new 04' Excursion 4x4 6.0PSD & it is a night & day difference. I set the cruise control & the truck hardly ever downshifts.
Yah, but that was only for 12 miles. The other steep section were less than 12 miles too. Then the way home was downhill. 24 miles of steep some slow down to 15 mph because of curves , but the remainder of the 236 miles was either flat or downhill.
What cost a $102?????? is that ffor 1 tank of gas?
It may seem like a lot for an Expy, but that is about right for an X. It took $92 to fill up my 2000 X PSD in SC. I usually get 11-12 pulling my 7200# camper through the mountains between Tennessee and South Carolina.
The wife says the read out (which was spot on when compared to hand calc) has been reading 25 mpg (13 mile downhill) and 17.5 mpg (13 mile uphill) lately. Just commuting.
Now this sounds about right. I guess my foot may have been a little heavy. I must have gotten excited of the thought that I could tow and not tell the trailer was back there. The expedition reminded me over every bump.
I'm still going to check the filters and increase my tire pressure.
42 +- gallons at $2.39= $102
I wasn't happy with the bill, but I was happy with the towing experience. Lovin the PTD.
