Dont seem as though the front wheel hubs are engaging. When I press the button on the dash, the (yes Elizabeth, they are automatic hubs) the 4x4 light comes on but I can't feel anything steering wise that indicates engagement. I pulled the front hubs, then started the truck and engaged the switch. I hear a clicking sound. I don't see the axle shafts move. I can still turn the shafts by hand with the truck running and 4x engaged. The rotors still turn by hand too. I put the hubs back on, and I can still turn the rotors by hand. I looked up on the axle housing but cannot locate a solenoid or other switch, vacum or electric. Where is it and how do I test it? New info: I think I just found out that I have a Borg_Warner transfer with electric switch (since I got an electric button) How do I test that dohicky on the back of the transfer?
Sounds like it might be something in the transfer case. You might want to take it apart and look it over. For example, some people have cleaned it up with success, others have found corroded wires down there:
That was in the plan. I don't know how complicated it is to pull that thing off the transfer tho. Gotta clue? Not covered in my haynes manual. Was I using a good procedure to check the operation? As far as turning the shafts and rotors by hand, is that a good indicator of a malfunction?
Ok, heres what's happened next. I put the truck on stands, started it, put it in gear, engaged the 4x. Front wheels did not turn. BUT transfer to front diff shaft did turn. Took off front tires and auto locking hubs. Engaged 4x, front axels turned but I could grab them and stop them. Turned off truck with it still in gear and 4x still engaged. Got under it and turned the front drive shaft. It transmitted mostion to the rear drive shaft and rear tires. So, it seems my transfer is fine, but the front diff is not transfering power. How does this work?
