I have a 2002 4x4 Ranger, and the front wheels are constantly coated with brake dust. I'll clean the rims and then a day or two later they are completely black again. Does anybody else have this same problem or know how to fix it. I've taken it to the dealership and they told me that this is normal for my vehicle. I've now put 15,000 miles on my truck and the problem persists. Should I buy new brake pads? If so what type or is there another way to prevent this.

Ford's brake pads are garbage, I'd replace them with some Wagner Maxx stops or some thing premium.
I believe that you should still have the floating calipers as my 2000 4x4 ranger does.
Tools you'll need:
13mm socket and 3/8 ratchet
flat head screw driver
jack stands
jack
T-Wrench
large C-clamp
Small bottle of brake fuild
Haynes manual -----> strongly recomend, best 15 dollar investment you'll ever make.
brakes will prolly run about 50 bucks or more.
just follow instructions in the haynes manaul, it only took me 30 min for both wheels.
P.S. I'd prolly wait till the warranty goes before you do any DIY work, but that is only my opinion.
If you decide to DIY shoot me an email if you have any ?'s.
I have a 2002 Ranger Edge and I have the same problem. Premium pads
and clean the rims throughly then a nice coat of wax should do the
trick. Ford has some crappy pads I had my front left caliper and
both pads replaced because at 5000 mi. It started to pull to the left
when braking. The dealer wanted to replace just the pads but a quick
call to Ford customer service had the service manager kissing my ***
in no time, and I was on the road in less than an 2hrs. If you want the pads for free go to the dealer or call customer sevice, thats what their there for.:7 :7 :7
no what the easiest thing to do is buy covers to put between your breaks and your rims.you can get them at www.#####.com. a set of 2 for your front rims are about 40 bucks.its easy to put in just take off your wheel put the cover on it fits right over the lugs then put the wheel back on it will keep all the break dust inside and none will get on the rim

I had those on mine, and I took them off and threw them away. It held too much water between the cover and the brakes when it rained that it was making it hard for me to stop. They kept the dust off though, but I would rather have to clean my wheels than to wreck my truck from not being able to stop.
i bought some carbon fiber type brakes from autozone. can't remember the name but they are lifetime warrenty.
zero brake dust and they stop on the dime with nine cents change.
about forty bucks
