I am about to install a third heater core. The last two were in about 6 month intervals for replacement. The problem starts by developing leak somewhere in the heater core. And of course, I get the sweet smell of used antifreeze when this happens. What am I doing wrong????? Last time I fully drained the system and used distilled water and antifreeze at the recomentation of a mechanic friend I know. Anyone out there know why I am having to replace the heater core every 6 months? Beside wanting to stay warm in the mornings .
I'm a little confused.
why would you keep changing the heater core??
there are no moving parts in it to wear out..
besides the smell is there antifreeze in the cab??
"Change it once it could be defective, change it twice the replacement could be defective, change it more than that look for another problem".
Law of average will tell you not all the replacments are bad or you are doing something wrong.
LAST EDITED ON 01-Sep-01 AT 11:27 AM (EST)[p]This may be a dumb question but are you sure its the core thats leaking, have you had them leak tested at a radiator shop ?? You sure the lines are good ?? Seems to me if it is the cores then you may not be mounting them quite right and there is some strain on them causing them to crack somewhere.
Im just guessing here as I have never changed a heater core.
Yes I do understand there are no moving parts. I have checked the heater hose as well and those are working properly. The antifreeze smell is coming from the vents. As for antifreeze in the cab, there is a drain system in the lower part of the compartment where the heater core resides. The antifreeze is draining outside the cab. Now what I haave not considered is the inlet vs. outlet hose. Does it matter which hose goes to which heater core port?
Hi I have a 93 ford ranger 2.3 and was slowly losing heat thanks to this site I flushed the heater core from the lower hose then to the upper hose some gunk and rusty water came out then ran clear . hooked it all back up and now I get to much heat but still having problems with my temperature gauge my next step is to check this . And to thoughly flush the whole system again , maybe you wait to long to flush the heater. really I have no answer for you only my experiences what I would do>
