i have an inch pound that i bought at sears. i use it for small engines and transmissions.i think the one i have goes up to 250in lbs. it was something like $59 i think. not too expensive for something you don't use alot but its a good quality wrench. hope this helps.......
for that pinion seal you don't need a torque wrench, you need a good 1/2 inch drive air impact wrench. Rattle it down until you take the play out of the pinion shaft. If it's leaking it is probably because it is just loose or you have a bad pinion bearing. The crush sleeve is the culprit. 8.8s are absolutely notorious for this. You are suppose to replace the crush sleeve every time but there is no way your going to collapse it without an impact wrench.
Check with Harbor freight either in your area or online, They have pittsburgh torque wrenches for $12.00 in ft/lb or $18.00 for inch lb. I have been told they are just as accurate as craftsman and carry a lifetime guarantee
if its the crush sleeve or the berring, let me guess
i will have to pull out the diff to replace ????
not sure i am ready to tackle something of that difficulity woried about re installing the diff and aligning
is there a way to tell if it is just the seal
it just starting seeping fluid, not even enough to make a drip yet
the truck has 120k high speed high way miles
no towing
would like to get atleast 30k miles more without having to mess with this again
This is an easy way to do it, Mark the yoke and the pinion nut with white out or a paint pen or whatever (draw a line from the nut to the yoke). as your removing the nut count how many complete rotations it takes to remove the nut. Replace the seal and clean the threads of the pinion and the nut. apply blue thread locker and reinstall the nut the same amount of turns till it lines back up with the line on the yoke.
inch-lb is for setting the preload when tightening the nut back up. as far as renting an inch lb beam/dial type torque wrench i haven't found anyplace. i've found in-lb's dial type on ebay and i know napa has beam type in-lb torque wrench for about 65 dollars. The nut is 1 1/16. I will be swapping gears and putting in an LSD so i've been looking for all the tools i need. Those are the two sources i've found. You will prob be ok just marking location of nut on the pinion. Plus you'll want to put some silicone on the splines in the yoke just to prevent additional fluid leakage.
