Gas Generator Question

I have a 12 h.p Briggs engine and a few large electric motors laying around my shop. Like that run large compressors.I need a small power plant to run lights and etc. at swap meets. Is it possible to redue the electric motor. So it would produce house current. Like to run a few lights, maybe charge some battery operated tools. screw gun,saw etc. If so, how or a ball park figure of what it might cost. I have rebuilt alternators, brushes, bearings and etc. But think this should be closely the same. Thanks !!

It would be more feasible to use some alternators to produce 12 volts and then use an inverter to get 120 ac. I have 4 alternators hooked up to an engine. I just haven't gotten around to completing it.

motor as a generator

The short answer is no. Generators need a source of magnetism to work. Either in the form of a permanet magnet or a field winding. Common induction motors do not have such features. These motors create the magnetism they need to operate by having a copper bar "winding" on the rotor that gets energized by slipping, that is the rotor is running slower than the magnetic field in the stator. It does not lend itself to working as a generator. I would suggest searching garage sales. Small generators can be found for a reasonable price.
