99 ranger 4x4 problem

99 ranger 4x4 problem
Hello, I have a 1999 ford ranger 4x4 3.0, 68,00 miles. It appears to be trying to engage 4x4 all on it's own at times. It has done this 3 times and sounds like cogs trying to engage and makes a loud hard thump. The first time i was on pavement doing about 30 mile an hour and I thought the front drive line was coming out from under the truck.
I stopped looked under truck and everything looked fine, put in drive and no problems after that. It has done this 3 times. I have taken it to dealer and it is there now. I have a feeling they will not find any solution as this does not happen alot. I am worried it will really mess something up. It has other issues too is why I took it to dealer. Thanks
