I have a 95 Ford Ranger XLT EC. (V6 3.0) I do a ton of driving and am ready for a new clutch but was wondering what would be involved in doing a tranny swap.
If I'm not mistaken it looks like the 4r55e is the transmission I would need. My only concern is will it be a straight bolt in job or is there alot of custom fabrication required. i.e. Floor shifter, ECM/PCM Replacement, etc.
There's probally about a thousand guys who'd swap out parts with ya. You'll probally have to do the flywheel back to drive shaft. Yours will be easier than the guy going from auto to manual. As a matter of fact, I'll bet you could make a few bucks on the swap. I'd post something in the forsale forum. But I'm like you, I like my auto.

Hmm.. Okay.. Thanks guys.. I was sorta figuring that the PCM would be needed too but I wasn't exactly sure.
Now as far as doing a swap from the tranny back. Would that mean there is indeed a difference in the Tranny crossmember, Driveshaft length, etc or could I just simply drop down the Manual Tranny and slide it out of the way.. bolt the TC to the flexplate and slide the A4 over and bolt it up..?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Dec-02 AT 08:59 AM (EST)]This I don't know, but I'd bet you'd need the flex plate back to, and including the drive shaft. But hang tight, I'm certain someone here has done this, or atleast the reverse and will post soon.
Mines an 87 suppercab with a 2.9, but if it helps at all I'd be glad to take mesurements and pics (I have a nice rack 3ft high) of anything you think might help.
You will need to remove the M/T flywheel from the engine crankshaft. Also remove the pilot bearing from the crankshaft. Then remove the M/T rear engine cover plate and M/T starter and install an A/T rear engine cover plate. Next install a flex plate in place of the flywheel and attach the torque converter. Install the A/T and A/T engine starter because the flywheel and flex plate have different numbers of teeth usually. Your M/T cross member and mount will work on the A/T, but you will need transmission cooler tubes from the trans to the radiator and any aux cooler you install. Did I mention new A/T radiator? You will need a shift cable or some floor shift conversion to close up the hole in the floor from the M/T shifter. New PCM for the A/T. Newer Autos are electronic so you would need the electrial harness to the connector on the trans that connects to the engine harness. Usually the engine harness unique for M/T so you might need a new engine harness with connections for the A/T harness. I am not trying to talk you out of the swap, but want you to be aware of the scope of the task. A/Ts' have a neutral safety switch that will have to be wired into your ignition and floor shifter conversion. I did one complete conversion from 3 speed manual column shift to C6 auto and it took me months to gather all the parts and learn enough to start the task. Another couple months to do the work, working weekends and a couple evenings.

Wow!.. It looks like what I was hoping would be a simple swap is actually going to be a huge undertaking. Shoot!. Sounds like what I need is to find someone who has the Auto and wants a Stick..
Somewhere in mid level management. After he retired he worked as the Livonia testing rep at APG. We ran tests together 1984-87. He was in his early 70's then.
