I just bought a 1979 f250 4X4, with a 460 and Dana 60's (?)underneath, I brought it home, but it has absolutely no power steering, and since it rides on 38's this make driving difficult! The previous owner said it needs a new steering box, when I took off the P/S cap there was no fluid, I filled it and it started to leak, from somewhere around the steering box. Does this sound like a steering box problem? does it need to be replaced or rebuilt? can I souce one from a junk yard? and what can I do to prevent this problem in the future? I dont want to do any "Hit and Miss" repairs and would appreciate any help. thanks
I did a more in depth inspection and found that the leak was comming from the Pitman arm shaft. I got the gasket kit (which came with rubber gaskets and metal spacers) removed the steering box, disassembled the whole thing to inspect it, cleaned it and reassembled everything, and that damn thing still leaks!!!!!!! I did notice some minor grooving around the Pitman arm shaft near the area where the gasket rides, so i sanded it lightly to take down the rough spots. Any ideas? I priced a rebuilt box and it as $440 with core charge, too steep for me. Thanks for the advice so far.
