Hi. I have an '85 Ranger and the battery appears to be close to dead, as I can't start it and the lights are dim and wipers are slow (it's been sitting for 2 months in the cold... while I've been away at school). So today, I was gonna take the battery out and run it over to AutoZone and see if they could charge it, but I couldn't get it out. I got the negative cable off, but the positive cable seems to have a slightly stripped bolt and a whole bunch of rust-colored (though it doesn't look like rust) crud on it. Any ideas on how I can get this off? Thanks.
If the cable is corroded that bad you will probably want to replace it anyway. But, you can try mixing together some baking soda and water, and using that with a brush to clean the corrosion off. You can try to pry the connector open a little with a screwdriver. If that doesn't work, very carefully tap (not hit, just tap) the connector with a hammer from side to side a couple times to loosen it up. Tap it where the cable comes into the connector, not directly against the battery post. Don't try to pry the connector off with the screwdriver or hammer, you're almost gaurenteed to punch a hole in the top of the battery that way.
Like I said, if the cable is badly corroded, you should probably replace it. Disconnect it from the starter solenoid and take it with you to the store to get the right size/length.
Just remove the positive cable at the solenoid and see if the battery takes a charge, if it doesn't charge don't worry about it, sounds like you need a new cable anyway.
