I have an '86 Ford E150 van with 5.0 liter engine. I've been fighting a problem with it since I got it. I've replaced fuel tank, both fuel pumps, fuel filter twice, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, Fuel Throttle position sensor, and air filter. I had the engine codes checked, and it showed that it was lean on fuel. Rechecked both fuel pumps, and discovered that connector on top of the fuel tank was broken and not making good contact. Fixed that, and it run some better for a while. It would still cut out just before shifting gears a little and at highway speeds some. It has gradually gotten worse and worse, until now my top speeds are 45 to 50 mph. You can just barely push the gas pedal without it cutting out on you. In Park or Neutral, it revs up fine, but in gear, with foot on the brake pedal, it will spit and sputter and backfire.
That sounds like the ignition control module, it's on the bottom of the distributor, take it off and have it tested (repeatedly if it passes teh first time.) It may be an intermittent connection inside of it.. I would also pull the oxygen sensor and see if it's all carboned up.
I already tried replacing the oxygen sensor, and it didn't make any difference. Sorry, forgot to mention that. This thing has been driving me crazy! Any other ideas before pulling the distributor? And which side do I pull it from?
The ICM should be connected to a flat spot on the bottom of the dizzy, it's held on by 2 little torx bolts.... I'm assuming it's EFI and has the TFI ignition.
