And yet another exhaust thread

Let's say I only had my stock muffler replaced with a Flowmaster 40 series, which seems to be the most used by reading threads, what can I expect as far as sound and performance? How would dumping after the muffler differ from replacing the muffler only?

I'm hoping for somekind of performance gain and I don't want anything ungodly loud. Just a fairly noticeable psuedo V-8 sound. Besides, my driveway is a couple hundred feet long and steep. I have to go up in first gear so it would be loud. That might wake the wife if I come in late after a night out with my friends. ....That just wouldn't be any good. I can hear it already.

I've recently put a FM40 on my truck and dumped it right after the muffler. It's fairly loud within the cab in the low RPM range, after that it really isn't noticeable. I've even got my entire cab sound deadened except for the roof. The sound is clean, very deep, and solid. That's all i can say about it so far, doesn't sound like a V8, doesnt even sound like a V6 really. Sounds like a very clean Honda. People may disagree but I was in the Honda world for awhile, and when you throw a good exhaust on them, leave the cat and resonator, it doesn't sound like a fart cannon.

Anyhow, i've been told after it 'breaks in' it'll sound better...just have to give it a few months or couple hundred miles.....i've got about 250 miles/1 week on mine so far.....

eh, it's getting a little better. I haven't heard it from the oustide yet, being revved or driving by. But at idle, it seems to grumble quite a bit, and some of my buddies say it sounds like an 8.
Actually, today while revving it (at my parents that were driving by), it sounded kind of cool, it had a little pop-backfire sound to it, which I think sounds meaner that just a plain old VROOOOM...

I guess it just needs some time....

good sounding 4.2L

I have a 4.2L with a 40 series flow master. single inlet and duel outlet. i have a 5 speed so it sounds better than a automatic because it rumbles and pops when you slow down while in gear. I have had alot of people compement on my exhausts and ask me if it is an V8. It does start to sound deeper after a while. ive had it on my truck 4 months

Yes...Patience is a Good Thing...It took my Magnaflow some time to develop its sound also...I am guessing the buildup of carbon coated onto the walls of the muffler?

Have any of you heard of this exhuast??A dual outlet flowmaster, with one pipe coming out the passenger side behind the wheel like normal, but with a tip...And the other turned down right after the muffler??..I heard this mentioned the other day.

so exactly how long did you wait for the mufflers (flowmaster 40) to get a really good sound?

I want to go true dual later on, and i keep thinking about having one 'broken in' fm40 right next to a brand new one, and how much different they will sound...

Mine took about a 1 1/2 months (believe it or not) to start sounding really good. It sounds great right now...especially in the cab. It is louder in the cab than it is outside...sounds like a V8 in the cab.

Thanks for all of the replies, but what about performance gains or losses when just changing the muffler and leaving the 4 cats? Any change at all?

Yea, the performance mufflers are less restrictive than the stock mufflers. You'll get a few more ponies. Also depends on your setup-true duals, how many bends in your pipes, etc.

To tell you the truth, I noticed a real difference when i put in my intake (MAC), but a week later, i threw on the FM40, and couldnt really tell. I even reset the ECU so that it might detect a new setup or whatnot, and I couldn't tell much difference in power. I'm sure you'd see a power increase on a dyno, but not from just driving regular driving. Maybe i was expecting a lot more, similar to what i got from the intake?

My next exhaust setup is going to be wild, i'm going to have the pipe come out from behind the front wheels, then the muffler, then more pipe, coming in right before the rear wheels. Like nerf bars, using the muffler as a step!!!

haha you would have to do some extreme welding and some thickass piping for that wicked setup
