Fast-forward seven months:
After completely replacing [on my '75 F-250 2wd 6900 GVWR] all front end parts (I-beams, radius arms spindles brakes, tie rods) with another set off of an 8100 GVWR F-250 camper special 2wd (replacing every bushing and bearing and pin), and still running fresh tires, the truck still would not drive right. So I gave in and bought a rebuilt power steering gearbox and just finished replacing the thing last night and now (FINALLY!!) it drives nicely.
SO, after all this, my advice would be to forget about rebuilding the gearbox yerself and just buy a rebuilt one ($169) and save the time and aggravation.
Check sector shaft where lower seal would be,alot of times a "groove" forms on the shaft itself and is only a matter of time before leak starts again,Also might want to check around,I buy rebuilt boxes from dealer with lifetime warranty, the new ones are about $100 more and only have a 1 Yr. warranty.(Haven't figured that out yet)
I've got a 1980 300/6, 3spd on the column...my steering has some play. I have tighten the adjustment screw and the steering waas tight...loosen it a bit and it seemed okay until the other day, then it had lots of play in the steering.
Anyone purchased a rebuilt box? I'm concern that the gears may have given up and it is time for replacement. Also, how much should I expect to spend?
