finally got everything hooked up.... it turns over no gas gets to carb for some reason... when i put gas in carb it coughs it back up and spits.... gapped points... get spark... dunno what else it could be... i sandlasted and some sand in carb... is that really bad? im pretty sure i put in distributor the right way. my fuel pump was working fine before rebuild... i had a 360 before and then created a 390... is the fuel pump different, i know its not, but its worth asking... Any suggestions would be awesome cuz i want my big red back on the road...
haha... i didnt sandblast the carb.. i sandblasted my engine bay and sand got everywhere including some on carb... is the dizzy the distributor... it was pointing at 1 when it was at the top
i had a problem similar to your when i tried to start my 360 after i rebuilt it. It turned out that it just wasnt getting any gas so i unhooked the gas line from the carb and sucked the gas up until it was at the top, then filled the reservoir on the carb up and then pumped the gas a bunch of times and it eventually started. Runs fine now except i did end up having to replace the fuel pump cause it went bad after about 100 miles so this could also be your problem.
Similar problem when rebuilding mine. The same thing will happen if you run out of gas going down the road. These mechaincial fuel pumps are stubborn, they only pump gas, then air gets in the line it wont pull or push any fuel. You have to keep putting gas down the carb and run it enough to force the pump to pull the gas thourgh. Once its pumping gas its fine. Edit: Make sure you put the air cleaner on after putting the gas down the carb, sometimes flames shoot out and cause fire! Just keep dumping gas down the carb til you get tha pump to coportate.
... and if you have the fuel pump with the canister filter on it, you may want to fill the canister up too.
The motor should have started when you put gas down the carb. Make sure your piston in the #1 cylinder was on the compression stroke and then check where your rotor on the dist. is pointing too.
anytime i put gas into the carb it spits it back up... i did get a very cool fire ball come out last night.... i need to keep messing with the distributor, its really being stubborn where i need to put it.... also, i aligned the teeth where the timing marks were with the two little dots, cam dot down crank dot up.... the dots arent exacly line up, but are like not even a tooth off they are just slightly off my probably 1/8 in if that... will that effect anything, mechanic says it should still start...... if i put the distributor in right should it spit back up through the carb?? should i put carb cleaner in? i know gas isnt going up.... what did he mean my suck gas up... suck it up the tube with your mouth??? also i am using my old spark plugs, but that all worked before.... could i just test them by taking out and placing in plug and turning over to see if there is spark? man i just want this thing to run, i am going to work on it some more tomorrow, i have to drive back down to eugene, going to the university of oregon game tomorrow they are playing u of arizona.... GO DUCKS!! anyway, i will probably be asking more questions later..
You can try some starting fluid in the carb to see if you get a fire. It sounds like something either has air/vapor lock or blockage possibly from your sandblasting. It could be a clogged gas filter too. As things are stirred up they get trapped and you would be suprised how much rust can collect in there. I had a quarter size deposit in the bottom of the canister on my Carter with the filter on the bottom. G.
i put a lot of gas in the carb and i swear it almost started, but then stopped turning over.... my battery is dead and on the charger, but when i tried to turn it over again everything by the solenoid, or i should say on the solenoid started smoking... then i felt the wires, my battery wire and the starter wire, and they were both really hot...... off the subject....also i checked connections with a light and saw everything was solid except the wire that goes to the oil filter for the pressure i guess and the ligh flashes... what does that mean? i wish it were light out still... thanks guys..
I got it started!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy now, but gas is spraying out of the fuel filter by my carb.... needs a new clamp... my radiator leaks.... going to put stop leak in and see if that works...i need to go to muffler shop and have my stuff welded back up.... then it needs to be tuned up.... the way i got it started was that i had to put the plugs in a different compared to how they usually go in.... i better write it down... Any other sugestions you guys have that i should probably do?
Yes, clean the spark plugs off good, becasue I bet there crudded up from flooding. I doubt stop leak will do anything, its proably one of your hoses or your heater core, maybe a clamp is loose, stop leak for radiators really doseant do anything except clog 40 year old dirty coolant passages.
You could crack an egg in your rad, I seen it on mythbusters and it worked, though, probably not for long.
I thought spark plugs only go in one way?? What am I missing?
