The TFI module is found on the side of the distributor. It receives pulses from the distributor and computer and fires the coil to produce the spark the plugs use.

They can also be 'remote mounted' in later vehicles. Follow the bundles of wires from the distribulator and one of them should lead to a rectangular-ish package about 1/2" thick byu 1.5" by 4" and have about 5-6 wires going into it. Mounted on one if the inner fenders I think.
I cannot tell you, or anyone, which years went to the remote mounting.
Did they do the remote mount as part of that TFI recall??? There was a class action suit about that also. It cost me $700 to "fix" my TFI on an old van (I converted back to Duraspark), but it was not an approved fix and Ford would not pay for it.

I think that the remote mount TFI was not related to the 'recall' and I thought that FoMoCo did not really do a recall, but answered to a class action suit. I had to replace the TFI on every car that had it... and my brothers turbo t-bird too, in the rain, of course, at his work.
The remote mounts were in those vehicles that had a REAL heat problem under the hood, or were 'work' vehicles, I think. Don't remember the details, but do know that they were made. I'd think that anyone could remote the TFI if you didn't mind using 'extension cord' wires. Two hookups, and your're done. Have to get a heat sink for the TFI, though. I'd look at a U-Pull-It for a remote, and grab the wires and heat sink from that one..
