[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 01:42 PM (EST)]One question for y'all. Thinking about buying a newer Ranger. Have a 98 XLT 4x4, 3.0L V6, 5 speed manual. I had a salesman tell me today that they do not make, and never did make, a 4.0L V6 with a 5 speed manual tranny. He says no matter what year, all 4.0 V6's are automatic tranny. The only trucks he had on the lot were all 2002 and 2003 and all auto tranny.
This doesn't sound right to me. Is that true? Ford NEVER made a Ranger with a 4.0 V6 in a 5 speed manual tranny?
I know the new FX4 has the manual.
And i think a few years back it could be ordered with the manual.
I'll look around a bit I'm Pretty sure hes wrong .. Anyone who states NEVER HAVE and stuff like that normally is(wrong).

Man, I never knew that my 2000 4.0L 4x4 5spd 4dr had the Automatic shifter on the floor...shouldn't the 1-2-3-4-OD-r read P-r-1-2-d-Od?
man he's full of it, its probably more like they dont want to order one. I just looked at a 2003 4.0 4x4 with a 5spd that was not an edge or anything fancy.
Absolutely....Ford has always offered the 4.0 with the standard tranny. In fact, it has always been the STANDARD transmission with the 4.0. The automatic is optional I'm pretty sure. I just bought my '99 a week ago, and I specifically wanted an auto. myself, but I remember seeing many 4.0/manual combinations during my search for a truck. That salesman either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he just doesn't want you to go somewhere else and buy a truck because HE doesn't have what you want. Be cautious...
My memory when I was shopping my '94 Ranger: 3.0L -- Auto or 5 sp. manual, 4.0L -- Auto or 4 sp. manual. So technically (at least in '94), you couldn't get a 5sp. manual with the 4.0, but you COULD get a 4 sp.
Just pulled out the original sales brochure for '94, guess I was wrong (the pain, oh the pain).
In a nutshell, regardless of which engine you chose, you could have either a 4 sp. auto or 5 sp. manual. Of course, the 5 sp. for the 4.0L was different than that of the 2.3L and 3.0L, both of which had the Mazda-designed box. The 4.0L's was a beefier box for the added torque.
Ahh, yes, the old 'don't go anywhere else' bit. I have been looking around and haven't seen a 4.0 5 sp. but that doesn't mean they're not out there somewhere just waiting for me.
I want the torque...I love the torque. I drove my buddies 4.0L auto yesterday and couldn't believe the difference. I'm sticking with the 5 sp., guess I'm just going to have to look a little harder, and call that bozo and tell him I ain't buying from him. Worst part is I know him personally. I guess the bottom line IS everything with those guys.
I would like to thank you guys for your help. I knew I could count on y'all.
Another question though: I just spoke to another guy that I was talking with about a 4.0 auto. He tells me that the towing capacity is rated about 1500 lbs. less with the 5 speed than with the auto.
Is this true? or is he feeding me a line too? Is the towing capacity greater with the 5 sp. or an auto? And what about off-road performance...would you thin the auto would be better for that? I think these guys are just trying to sell me trucks that I don't want.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 02:39 AM (EST)]My 93 Ranger came with a 4.0, 5spd trans. Your salesman doesn't know jack about what he is selling. Check the owners manual in the truck that you are looking at for towing specs, it will provide all of the weight info that you need. The axle ratio helps determine towing capabilities, and the code is on the sticker on the drivers door. For off road, I prefer the standard. Gearing down on long steep hills helps keep you from cooking your brakes, and helps when crawling down slippery surfaces.
Man, he is so full of it. I have seen several 2002 and 2003 4.0 Rangers with the 5 sp. manual. There are 2 sitting on the lot of one of my local Ford dealers. Buy one from another dealer and then drop by to show him your 'non-existant' truck.
Follow this link and type in your zip code to begin dealer search http://www.fordvehicles.com/dealerships/locatedealer/ then search inventory for Rangers in area dealers, one of them is bound to have what you want.
I've got a 91 xlt 4x4 with a 5 spd. I'd NEVER have a 4x4 with an automatic tranny. I love the fact that I can climb hills idling in first gear so steep that your body is pressed back into the seats and it feels like your blasting off to the moon. Idle down in 4 low and not touch the brakes. My buddy has a full size F150 4x4 with an auto tranny... Todd, what's that smell??? is it your torque converter or just your brakes??? hehehe My Ranger KICKS HIS BUTT.
Actually, for off-road driving an automatic is what you want.
When you have to get down and creep, or launch from a stop, the auto. handles this a LOT easier with less wear and tear. That is the very reason WHY automatics have a higher tow rating. (Yes, the dealer was telling the truth...on that part at least). From a stop, and creeping along, an auto. can handle more load because of it's design. This rule carries over to off-road driving, when you may be stuck in mud or climbing rocky grades, etc.
I admit there are some advantages to manuals. I've had multiple trucks with both. On the interstate there is no question...manual is superior. But in town or off-road, the automatic is the way to go. At low speeds, they are in their element. (Esp. if you get one of these new 5-speed-automatics, they are sweet).
