When doing the annual pre winter maintenance of vehicles that will be sitting for the winter, I noticed one of my trucks is showing signs of rust starting in the front lip of the hood. I know this is a common spot for rust to on these trucks, but this was what I thought was one of my better hoods.
Is there an easy way to prevent this, stop it from getting worse or fix? It's not exactly an easy spot to get at or weld a piece into. Just starting to see the rust color through the paint, no bubbles or pin holes yet.
Thanks Guys.
Like You Said This Is A Normal Place For Rust, the Repairs That I Have Made ,i Just Ground The Rust Around The Area And Mig Welded The Hole Or Added A Metal Patch.that Area Didnt Get Much Paint From The Factory, and Most Hoods From The Midwest Are Brown Rust In This Area Of The Hood.so Its Usually A Temporary Fix.
As the recipient of the "most rusted hood" award at Slickstock 2004...
The problem is the hoods rust from the inside out, thanks to being assembled by Ford before painting and getting no protection on the backside.
Your only options are to keep battling it from the outside, cutting and welding the affected areas.
Or...do it the right (but very difficult) way. Cut the welds and remove the inner structure along the front, get in there and sandblast all the crud out, cover with POR-15 or Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and weld the structure back in.
Rust free hood? I doubt one actually exists...been through 3 of 'em trying to find a good replacement. Maybe if you live in AZ or someplace...
Repaired hood probably for last time, fortunately not major. Was able to grind, sand majority of pitted area at peak and use metal filler. Regret not reinforcing underside, find hood tends to buckle with minimal pressure on surface that easily pop out, but a pain. Sprayed underside w/ couple heavy coats of rust delaying paint. Wonder if anyone has purchased, or seen the 'fiber glass hoods'. Not necessarily advocate of fiber glass but agree locating decent metal replacement is difficult. Have seen the fiber glass hood in Ford supplier catalog, Pricey though.

Those !#@$ hoods! I had a decent metal man replace the lip on mine for $150. It's not an ideal fix, but satisfactory. No more rust. And I have a theory: The rust on my hood really accelerated after I parked the truck and left it for a couple years on a slight incline to the rear. I think this allows the rain water to hang on as it rolls to the inside of the lip where it is drawn-in by capillary action between the inner and outter panels of the lip. That's when the rust can really take hold. I would advise avoiding parking the truck on a rearward incline, at least in the rain.
What about those of us in rain/moisture belt....which I think is everywhere but NM,Az,SoCal,W Texas????
Im in wa, rain capitol I think of the mainland....I have been fortunate in recent years to find not 1, or 2, or 3, but 4 tight hoods....4th one is in wrecking yd now....lotta mud in it though....if anyone needs a driver hood.....shout as I bet it could be had for a short song...
I was thinking of cutting circle holes, maybe 1" diameter, in the inner structure of the hood lip, and thru those holes blasting and/or painting, & rust-treating. Has anyone tried this, or would like to offer opinions on technique or the likelihood of success?
I had the same problem with hood-lip-rust on my 66. I cut a slot out of the back in order to sandblast the area and found a piece of padding in there!!!! Acted like a sponge!! The truck was made in California if that has any meaning. Painted it up and haven't had any problems since .That was about 8 years ago.
Hey Camperspecial....where in washington are you? My hood's got a nice twelve inch rectangle hole cut in it to be patched. Not to mention some other pesky problems. How much do you figure for the hood you're referring to? I live in Spokane.
