I have a 97 F250 HD Supercab with an overdrive automatic and I want to replace the transmission filter, but I don't know whether to use mercon or type F transmission fluid. If it is mercon, what type of mercon do I use?
Yikes! Mercon V is a special synthetic. I know in the 99 and up trannys it is a major no no. Dextron/Mercon is what they recomend. I'm sure others will be along shortly to give you the straight scoop. I'm guessing you should drain the Mercon V and fill with mercon/dextron. If you want a synthetic use a Mercon synthetic like Mobil 1.
Well, I put Mercon V in it. What's the difference between Mercon V and Dex/Merc III?
If that trans is a E4OD or 4R100 then you need to drain that Mercon V and put in a Mercon rated fluid. If you want a synthetic ATF then use Mobil 1...it is Mercon rated. I think the difference is the coefficient of friction of the fluid.

I've driven probably about 10 miles on it with the Mercon V. The bottle says "For 1996 And Newer Ford Vehicles" and also
The Mercon V Advantage
A premium synthetic blend Automatic Transmission Fluid engineer to meet manufacturer's warranty requirements for Ford MERCON V, MERCON and General Motors DEXRON III specifications. It is formulated to provide performance benefits over conventional type ATF fluids including:
- Enhanced anti-shudder protection for smooth shifting performance
- Superior high and low temperature protection for extreme operating conditions
- Superior resistance to viscosity breakdown for better wear protection
This fluid is compatible with conventional ATF fluids and is recommended for passenger and commercial vehicles requiring the following fluids/specifications:
- Fords MERCON V and MERCON
- General Motors DEXRON III, DEXRON III-G, DEXRON IIE and DEXRON
- Meets Allison C-4 fluid requirements
I thought that that would work because I have an E4OD and the dipstic says use MERCON fluid. I don't have a manual of any kind for it, but am planning on buying a ford service manual for it.
There used to be a guy lurking around here by the name of Mark Kovalsky...I think...he is very knowledgeable on Ford auto trannys....maybe he will chime in...? I thought I remembered him commenting on this a while back...I wish the search feature was working so I could find it...I had asked him a question along this line (Mercon or Mercon V) a few years ago before I made the switch to Mobil 1 in my trannys.

Look under the "Tech Articles" tab on the upper right side of the forums page , and then look under "transmisions and axles", it is covered there in an article by Mark Kovalsky.
Last night I drained the fluid out of the torque converter, then drained it from the pan and replaced the filter again. Then closed up the pan and converter, after putting in a new filter, and fillled it up with 15 quarts of DEXRON/MERCON III. When I did it thursday (2 days prior with the wrong fluid) I only drained the pan and changed the filter and put in 8 quarts of MERCON V in it.
It drives great now and shifts real firm now compared to when I bought it and after changing the fluid with MERCON V. But I'm wondering if the little bit of fluid left that I didn't drain (3 qts) will have too much MERCON V in it and damage the transmission. What do you all think? Should I go buy 15 more quarts (still have 5 remaining) of DEXRON/MERCON III and flush it again next weekend? Or will that little bit probably not do any harm?
Andy...
Remanufactured tranni will cost you about $2000. plus install, drain that tranni again and add the new MERCON. NOT MERCON-V. They don't mix.
I have your 1997 Shop Manuals...both of them. They cost me $140. in '97 and have paid for themselves 10 times over. E-mail me if you are interested.
I think that you are probably O.K. with what you have done...the two fluids are compatible...they just have different friction qualities. I would probably drain the pan one more time and refill with Mercon...and then not worry about it anymore till next year.

On later model trucks the owner's manuals state that MERCON and MERCON V are NOT compatible. There is also a TSB that spells out what fluid is used in what transmission. It says to not use MERCON V in an E4OD/4R100, and the MERCON and MERCON V are NOT compatible.

Do you have better information than Ford?
Read Crazandy's previous post (#6) where he quotes the info off the bottle...I don't have better information than Ford...just Ford's info! Also, my manual states that the fluids are not interchangeable...it does not say that they are not compatible...my maual is for 2003 model year.
