firing order for a 400m

i have a 78 f150 with a 400m and a c6. which side is the number one cylinder on these motors, and does anyone know the firing order. also a guy told me that the cylinder head that is closest to the radioator is always number one plug. also when i pulled my distributor, is it common for the oil pump shaft to come out with it a couple of inches and thenm fall back down, or should it sit in some type of gear or groove or something???

Number one cylinder is the frontmost one on the passenger side of the rig. From there, two is behind that, then three and four. Number 5 is frontmost on driver's side then back from that is 6,7, and 8. The firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. There should be a small circular retainer that keeps the oil pump driveshaft IN the pump....it should be right underneath that flat spot your distributor gear rides on. If your pump shaft actually comes up a 'couple inches', it's OK...just make sure that the shaft falls back into the pump and not into the oil pan.....that's a crappy day.
