where can I find the serial number on my engine to confirm if its a W,C or M? And when i find it how do i tell what it is? We only realized it was 351 when the 302 firing order didnt work (uncle said it was a 302, its not). I would like to find the serial number and confirm my engine before doing any good work. I will also post this on the 351M/400 forum as well. Thank you all for the help
There are no serial numbers on Ford engines and better yet there are no engine model identifying numbers.. that has to be done visually so post some pics.
ok so we kinda decided it is a 351W. 6 bolts, firing order matches a 351. I have another question, this engine has a serpentine belt. Its a 79 truck, so unless im crazy its not original, but i dont know what a good year to go with to order parts? For example, it needs a freeze plug. Is there a good year for ordering purposes for a 351W carb'd?
Number dummy, I agree completely. I guess my question for clarification is when did the 351W start getting serpentine belts? and ill have to update the about me. Unfortunately the 78 is no more so now i have a hand me down 79 f100.
Dirtyferd, it has the ridge. And i dont mean any disrespect, but there has to be a more exact way to determine an engine, versus a number of valve cover bolts and if theres a ridge or not. there has to be number or something somewhere.
There is a casting number on the bottom of the block by the starter. That doesn't necessarily tell you the year of the vehicle it came in. For example, a 1991 truck could have a block with an 1989 casting number. There may also be an aluminum tag under a bolt on the carb, distributor, or coil. There are plenty of places for deciphering those tags, if you have one, online.

Actually, VC bolts are quick and easy. 302 to 351w the ridge is quick and easy as well. Once you know the series, the casting number is going to tell you the casting revision, and the date code is going to tell you the casting date.
I didn't go through this whole thing but for example I found C4AE in more than one place. Two different engine series. So you need to know that first, then on to the casting numbers.
question guys. This same engine, has a 351 oil pump M-83 at autozone; but I thought the thermostat housings on 351 came out of the block? This one comes out of the intake. thanks as always
