hey all im new to this site but i was wondering what everyones oppionin on a 351 cleveland vrs a 351m in a 78 f250. this truck is set up mostly for mud but i have the opion t rebuild the 351m for about 1000 or possiable by a 351c for around 2oo and just put it together. what i really need to know is, are the tranny bolt patterns the same and are the headers, those are the two things that will prob make me lean twards rebuiling the 351m. thanks for any info guys
I'd go with the 400, too. Like Cleatus said, tranny bolt patterns are different, so are mounts. Headers/manifolds won't fit either (even though they do fit the heads), the passenger side manifold on an M block takes a sharp bend inward around the starter housing. This sharp bend causes it to collide with the starter housing on the narrower C. There may be headers out there that fit it, but you'd have to do some measuring.
if you can by a rotating assembly for a 400 somewhere such as PAW or your local napa store buy that and put in the 351m block, and yea I agree with everyone else as much as I like the 351c unless you are replacing a small block 302 or 351w then stick with the m motors due to bellhousings, btw the 351c uses the same motor mounts as a windsor based engine.
the 351m uses the same bellhousing as the 429/460, so if you want to do a different swap then that would be one to look into but bellhousings are aobut the only thing that is the same, even though you can buy kits to do that swap
