first start up psd smokes blue

hey guys i have a 94.5 f350 PSD. The intire summer was ok when first start ups (just smoked alittle), but now its getting to about 40ish out in the morning and the truck will smoke blue for about 5 mins when first started, and seems to run alittle rough also. I alow the glow plugs to warm up the cylinders before starting the truck but it smokes still..could it be some bad glow plugs, injectors???please help guys before winter hits and i get really cold here in New Jeresy.
p.s. all fluids are NEW all filters are NEW, the only other thing is that i just filled up at some no name brand gas staiton (cheapist place around for fuel)
thanks guys
erik

I belive that a little smoke on startup is normal. But its a good idea to check out the glow plugs. Mine smokes a little blue and rouns rough like your talking but not till it gets around frezzing.

I have had some blue smoke too even when it's warm and still can't locate the problem.

A little smoke on a cold start is not unusual. It's the nature of the beast. You may have a bad glow plug or two, or a weak relay. Your rings may be worn too if you're high milage, not much of an issue as long as it's running right.

Freddy. You might have nicked an o-ring when your injectors went in.

I will check the O-rings and glow plugs, the bad thing is that the only codes that it was throwing were ICP and a timing code which I attribute to the turbo, chip and injectors.thanks for the advice

hey guys thanks for the reply. NO it smokes heavlly blue for like 5 mins in the morning when i let it warm up, then when i drive away it leaves a smoke trail behind me for about 1 or 2 miles. it also runs really rough like a miss fire. Like i said this happened once it starter to get colder around here in New Jeresy. I ordered glow plugs at a local ford dealer yesterday just for the hell of it, plus they are only $10.00 a peice (OE ford parts). I dont know of the service history of the truck ( i just bought it 5-6weeks ago), but i have when through the intire truck "fluids, filters, etc changed". I dont know if the truck has had the glow plugs replaced, but it has 154,000 miles on her. Thanks guys.
erik
p.s. it kinda started acting up after i fueled up at some no name brand gas station (cheapes fuel price around). i dont no if its bad fuel of what, but i have a new fuel filter in her.

Hmmmmmm, that much smoke has me worried. How much miles you have on the motor? It may be rings or valve guides. I had an old dodge 318 one time that would do the oppisite, it was fine til it was warm and then started smoking terribly.

Was having the same problem on my 94.5 w/150k. Injector o-rings (external & internal) fixed it.

What I think is going on: The injectors have o-rings separating the fuel chamber from the high pressure oil chamber. When those o-rings get old they get hard, especially in a cold engine. When you start up from cold some of the hi pres oil is forced past the old stiff o-rings causing the blue smoke. When the engine gets a little warmer the rings soften and begin to seal properly. Don't just replace the outer o-rings, the injectors should be removed and gone through by an injector shop - totally solved my problem.

BTW, the early PSD's had particularly bad 0-rings

thanks for the reply.
well i just got in from changing the glow plugs. First i did the passenger side (no problems), then i went to the driver side. after removing the valve cover i seen the front harness connection (valve cover gasket to inj& glow plug) was melted BAD..i pulled the connector apart and found that the end wire (first cylinder on driverside glow plug wire) is smoked (melted). i sat for about 30mins and was think away to fix (because this is my primery vechile, mustang not street legale) well i just jump the melted wire and spliced in a new wire..its a rig job till i can order a new valve cover gasket and inside harness from ford tommorow....i installed the new glow plugs on the driverside and finshed up. I turned the key to on and tested the power to the harness...test light is on..its a go...started it, drove around a few miles. Now i must wait till tommorow moring to see how it starts COLD..if it still smokes blue then i will replace the injector o-rings MAYBE even get some HI-preformance injectors if i have the money..thanks again for the reply and great info.
