Hello, I have an 89 f-150, 302, 5 spd truck, and it's getting bad gas mileage, and sounds like the lifters are tapping. But they only tap in 5th gear, about 3/4 of the way up a good sized hill we have here in Texas.
I took it to AutoZone, and they ran a diagnostics on it, with the key off, and the truck threw code 35 as the only code. Should I get them to run a test with the engine on, and what does fixing a code 35 entail? I'm a carbd mustang fan, but I don't know jack about the fuelie 302s.
If this is a Code they retrieved from memory, Code 35 is a EGR Valve Position Sensor problem.
The EVP sensor monitors the movement of the EGR diaphram. It's mounted on the EGR valve and has a 3 wire connector.
When the EGR valve opens or closes, the diaphram moves.
The sensor monitors the movement and sends a voltage
back to the computer. If the voltage isn't what the computer thinks it should be, it sets code 35.
Could be a wiring problem, EVP sensor or EGR valve.
The manual says to attach a hand held vacuum pump and monitor the EVP voltage as you open and close the EGR valve.
Pull the vacuum hose off the EVP silinoid and see if theres suction. Do you have carbon on spark plugs, or place a white rag over the tailpipe and see if it turns black.
Thanks for the replies! I'll go see if I can figure out which one of the named culprits it is. On fox bodys, the egr is behind the carb, on a plate that the carb sets on. Where would it be on this truck? Thanks guys for helping me out!
On my '90 its just behind the throttle body on the passenger side. You should see a tube coming out from under the Upper Intake Manifold that will come to the bottom of the EGR valve. The VPS(Valve Position Sensor) on mine sits right on top of the EGR w/ an electrical connection going to it.
