Crap if I could I would. If I get a check I'm waiting on I will buy 'em both. If I don't do a MAF converion would it be ok if I added some headers and a throttle body spacer. I was told that doing any mods to a SD motor would screw it up. I am not lookin for a 1/4 mile monster here, just a little extra umph over stock. With the gas milage savings I got over the carbed motor I don't wanna loose it all by building it up too much. At $2.25 a gallon for regular I couldn't afford it anyway. BTW I went from around 9 miles a gallon to around 15. Every bit helps right now.lol
You can do headers, exhaust, etc without converting to mass air. Skip the throttle body spacer. Everyone I have talked to has said they are a waste of money. Unless you want to get into serious mods like Supercharger, stroker, different cam, etc. you will be fine with SD.
I totally understand about the gas mileage. I forgot to mention that a TB spacer is really a worthless upgrade on these engines. it's supposed to basicaly give the air just a bit more time to cool down before getting burned, but unless you have some serious cooling mods (like nitrous) you'll probably never see any gains from a spacer. I guess the myth comes from carb spacers, since they effectively increase the runner length and help out a bit with torque. With a TB-injection setup I could understand the benefits since it functions basically like a carb. With our trucks, though, a TB spacer is useless.
Check out this post for some easy (and cheap) upgrade ideas:
I have been told that bypassing the hoses that are suppoed to cool the TB is supposed to help. Is there anything that would be bad in doing that. I have a racing open air(no box) K&N filter with a home made heat sheild that pulls the air from inside the fender and not the engine compartment. BTW any word on using headers with the SD set up?
heh, that link I posted above talks about the TB coolant bypass. Check it out BTW, those hoses are designed to heat the TB, not cool it. In most climates, this heat is not necessary and just serves to lower performance and gas mileage.
Any headers you like should work just fine with SD. The only time you really see the problems with modding an SD setup is when you start changing the way air enters the engine. An upgraded cam, a supercharger, etc. will cause problems and make you want to go MAF. Headers will be fine. I am a big fan of coolong mods, so ceramic-coated headers are my favorite. I really like the new bassani optimum-length headers. that's what is on my x-mas list
You don't wanna see my x-mas list lol. It is very cold in the winter up here. YOu think I should leave the "TB heater" hoses on in the winter and remove them in the summer. I also heard switching to an electric fan help out some. What do you think?
I did that TB hose mod with no adverse effects. If you live somewhere cold you can just add some type of a "T" with a valve where you can bypass it when it's warm and open the valve when it gets cold enough to need it.
yes, switching to electric fans will help (a little bit) performance off the line, and fuel mileage in the city. keep in mind that the fan on your engine is clutched, so it only spins at about 1800RPM. once the engine is above that speed, it really doesn't lose any power to the fan. Electric fans are good in cold dlimate, too since they allow the engine to heat up faster. I've also heard that they will increase the life of the engine by a few thousand miles, due mostly to decreased wear.
