I have been told that a 302 will match up perfectly to the motor mounts on an 86 ford ranger. I was also told that the mazda tranny that is on my 2.9 will match up to the 302 is this correct? I am also planning on replacing the 8.8 rearend for a 9 out of a mustang. Any tips or advice?
Might i also add that the 302 that i am puting in is NOT EFI it is out of an old 82 and is carberated with a mechanical fuel pump (I think). I am trying to get away from the whole EFI thing as those parts start to get old they start to nickle and dime you to death, and that is where my truck is heading.

i think you would be better off with the 4.0, 'bout the same power output as a 302, but with a lot less weight and better on fuel, but if you just "gotta have a V8" the 8.8 rear should be fine but the ranger trans will need to go. efi a problem after a while? my '88 went 175,000 with the original fuel system intact, i upgraded to 302 V8 fuel injectors at around 175,000 and drove it to 203,000 before i traded it off. (that was 5+ years ago, and i last saw it still running 2 years ago.) why not go the extra mile and put a 351/C6 in it? then put tractor mufflers on it to make it nice and quiet and not give away your displacement. then you can blow away any high-revving ricer!
well to tell you the truth I am a country boy and love to hear a truck with "*****" a 302 will bolt up w/o mods a 351 requires mods. why when i looked up a 92 full size with a 302 did it bring up a mazda 5 speed w/ the same #'s as mine.
I had a friend put a 302 in a 87 ranger 2 wd. He had to change;
Motor mounts.
Make changes to the radiator mount and fire wall.
Custom radiator.
Electric fans behind the grill in front of the radiator.
Different exhaust manifolds/headers.
New larger dual exhaust system.
Driveshaft mods.
Changes to the A/C Heater box.
Different automatic transmission. (Don't know what you would run into with clutch linkage mods).
Steering linkage changes.
Different Oil Pan and pump.
And several other small changes. It's not exactly a "bolt up".

I was wondering what vehicle the 302 came out of? The one that i am bolting up is out of a 82 Bronco. It has the rear sump oil pump and pan. If i remember correctly the ranger is based on the old style Bronco frame. It looks just like my buddies old bronco frame.
I have Mazda's 5 spd in my '01 F150 4.2L, if it's the same one it's junk but it'll hold up for a while, and this is the same one they use behind the 4.6L and 5.4L

check out my 87. I bought it with the 302 alread in it. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/578311/6
I have a T-18 4speed with an adaptor that the 1350 t-case mounts to All drive shafts are still stock. From what I have read the ranger/bronco II stock trannies will not hold up to the V8. A lot of people that do this swap to a C4.
The mount holes had to be drilled out some, dual electric fans in front of the radiator, home made headers and they are still tight.
