I have an 04 that cuts out once in awhile. I will be running at 65 and the engine will bog down, blow white smoke, sputter and then after about 20 seconds take off again and run fine. It just turned 20,000 and it has happened about four times in the last 10,000 miles, Any ideas?
Another possible solution is the back pressure exhaust sensor - Mine was( still is but not as bad anymore) cutting out at high speeds where I had to pull off the road.....that seemed to make a difference - as SBV45 said - Do take it in!!!
if you have been re flashed the last 2 re-flashes eliminate the ebps, so the local dealer tells me , mine has been flashed 5 TIMES, the latest 2 days a go , engine still misses/stumbles intermitantly at low to heavy load .they have put a flight recorder on and thought it was the icp sensor ,also we have put 2 tubos, an egr vlve an injection control module and a ficm harness as well to fix this . i pick it up drive it home one day and call the the next to tell then lets try again, the last 5 monthe s have realy pissed me off. i can't even sell it becouse it might act up on a test drive . any ideas?
Mine did that as well and I am at 45,000...but mine would not start. Apparently there is a recall on the fuel/water separators and at the time the weather was <15 degrees and I formed ice crystals in my fuel filter. The truck was towed back to Ford and they took care of eberything.
i work on heavy eqiptment for a living and the oil gets chaged every 5000 and fuel every 10k , the filters have been changed twice just for good measure since this all started, ford doesn't have fuel pressure sensors on this engine so i had to make some guages for them. it's still at the shop again, told them to start looking for a truck to replace it with couse i've had it............
Have the dealer check the EGR. Mine did this and it was the EGR. I could disconnect it and it would stop, so I took it in and they found a bad EGR. They changed it out and no more problem.
yea they cleaned it first then replaced it, now they are putting a nother wiring harness on it and the ford tech peaple gave them a list of 30 different things they want the flight recorder to moniter when it screws up and i push the record button

my 2003 does the same thing and has just started surging while driving.computer showed resent egr failer, pulled and cleaned the egr twice and it still does it .pulled off the road today unplugged the egr and all was well.thinking of leaving it un plugged after seeing all the carbin on egr and inside manifold.anyone have any comment on this.
we tried that on mine didn't fix it but several others have unpluged it . just make sure the engine is warm and turned off before you unplug it. it should only open at idle to low throttle any way i would unplug it to eliminate it sticking open, you may want to clean it prior to doing this
My 06 did white smoke around 20k miles as well. Ended up having turbo replaced- no problems since. They told me that there was an oil leak and buildup within the turbo. I was just glad it wasn't a block.
I have had my EGR unpluged for about the last 10k miles and the truck seems to run better and the milage has increased 1-2 mpg. Only problem is the check engine light is on because it's a Cal emissions engine. If I have to take it to the dealer, I will plug it back in and clear the CEL.
wish the dealer would put a set of injectors in mine , they wont becouse they test fine at idle, told them it doesen't screw up at idle. i work on caterpiller equiptment and have had them test fine at idle but stall it uot and they fail the cut out test
