My BIL has a POS 91 Ford van that he got for free. He asked me to get it running. After re-installing the distributor after his attempt 180 degrees out, I got it started. Oh yeah, the wires to the fuel pump were broken and it was out of gas too! Anyway, it runs but not well. I'm trying to set the timing. The timing marks are strange to me. There is a hole and what looks to be 2 things that could be the pointer. I have found the degrees on the balancer. When timing is set to the top pointer, which most looks like a pointer to me, it runs poorly. Also, the sticker says to set the timing with the "in-line plug connector disconnected." What is the in-line plug connector?
You need to disconnect the SPOUT connector. Without doing this, you will certainly have a frustrating time getting the timing set.
I have a 92 302, and on mine the SPOUT connector is a jumper located on the driver side just behind the wheel well. There is a big harness/connector, and then one parallel to it with two wires that lead to a connector with a gray jumper at the end of it.
The pointy deal, the one you think looks most like a pointer, is most likely what you are looking for. Once you disonnect the SPOUT you should have better luck.
