Diff/Transfer Case Play '91 4x4
'91 4x4, 8.8 LS and BW 1356 transfer case. New U-joints, and the drive shaft has about 1"-1 1/2" play in it. That is, it can be rotated back and forth about an inch. Truck has 160,000 miles on it. My question is twofold, the chain in the transfer case, is it difficult to replace? After tightening the pinion nut, could my crush sleeve need replacement? I changed the differential fluid, and the ring and pinion looked okay. There is enough play that it sometimes surges at highway speed, and will do the clunk thing when decelerating.

I am not real familiar with transfer cases, but the chain should be only for the front axle. I think it is all gears going back to the rear axle.
Is the play in the rear end, transfercase or both?

Regarding the chain, that's what I thought also. But it does rotate constantly. The slack is both in the differential and the transfer case. The transmission in neutral and the transfer case in neutral allows you to put your hands on the driveshaft and rotate it 1/2" either way. I'm curious how to remove this slack.
