Towing Capacity
Towing Capacity
Can anyone help me with the official tow capacity of my Bronco II?? Unofficially, what can I reasonably tow with it? I am purchasing a trailerable sailboat, that will, including trailer, probabaly be about 3000 lbs.
My Bronco II is an 89 with the 2.9L V-6 with 220K on it, a newly rebuilt automatic, and a new driveshaft. I have a receiver hitch that is rated up to 3500 lbs.
I tried to follow the process in the owner's manual to determine tow capacity, but I can't follow it, and I haven't had time to actually go to a truck weighing station.
I know someone out there has figured this out. Thanks!!

I am inclined to think that you can do it, but keep in mind you are asking a lot from a small engine. My B2 got very warm just sitting still in traffic, so with salvage yard tanks the local radiator shop put in a pair of two row cores. Now with twice the std radiator capacity there are no heat problems- even the radiators from air conditioned B2's that I saw were only three row. Your auto tranny is going to be working the hardest in this task, I would recomend an auxillary cooler for it before you even try. Just think of how much your torque converter will be slipping as the 2.9 revs up to start the whole thing moving, and the trans behind the V6's don't look real beefy.Be gentle and take it easy-let us know how you do.
