I have a 97 150 ext. cab 4x4 with the 4.6
I have 140000 miles on it, the tranny is acting a little weird but has still been running. I put a extra tranny cooler on it to try and keep it cool. But I was wondering about how many miles they seem to last for everybody else. And if the time comes how much is a rebuild.
I have a 97 F-150 with the 5.4 L, with 200,000 plus miles and have had no tranny problems. With the abuse I put it through I'm impressed it has lasted that long. But I might suggest you try some Lucas transmission treatment. It will prolong the life of your tranny, and you just add it in with a fluid change.
I would drop the pan and change the fluid and filter. A rebuild is, well, too much. The days of the $100-200 tranny rebuild are over. You can expect $1000 for a rebuild and that is sad since the rest of the truck is probably OK. Even getting a used tranny will be iffy (cost-wise).

might be just your torque convertor slipping. those are like 300-500 bucks... to replace then prolly 100 for labor or so
I would purchase a new transmission from a salvage yard from a newer truck and swap that in. The newer 4r70w's have upgrades such as a better valve body, and 98+ trucks got the mechanical diode which replaces the old crappy roller clutch.
You will need to swap the electronics harness from the old trans into the new one.
What condition is the fluid in, and how often was it serviced?

A converter is less than 200 dollars with core new from the dealer, and labor involves dropping the transmission to install a converter, so its going to be more than 100 unless you get a good deal.

yeh i get a good deal on all my work. and i quoted prices of aftermarket performance convertors not OEM
Sorry about the delay, I service the tranny every 25 to 30k and put the tranny cooler right after the last fluid change. But the other problem I have it that last time I changed the fluid the mechanic told me that they had problems finding the right gasket and filter and also that the tranny that is in my truck isn't what is supposed to be in there according to the vin#. I was told that the tranny is supposed to be in a F-450 or F-550 superduty. Has any one else experienced this or heard of this?
